Anyone else see it? Realistic or typical modern movie crap?

I want to watch it but the preview turned me off with the Uboat captain speaking through the ship comms...

Read "The Good Shepherd" by CS Forester. It's what the movie is based on. Good read.

I watched it and liked it. My father who is a career US Navy surface warfare officer and spent most of his career on destroyers and frigates, said they got what life on the bridge of a ship was like very very close.

The sub talking over the Talk Between Ships(TBS) system is not something that happened, but it is something that could have happened. That system was a short range FM open signal, designed to allow line of sight communications. The U-boats had receivers and would listen for those signals as a way of identifying a convoy's general location. But there is no examples of them every talking back and lots of reasons why they wouldn't want to. I suppose they felt it made for a better movie to give the enemy a voice and make him more real. When you read the real accounts the fact that the U-boats were hidden and you never knew if they were around or targeting you made the tension worse for those sailors.

Tom Hanks is a history nerd and made a faithful adaption of the book while also telling the story of the Battle of the North Atlantic. I also like that the movie was partially shot on the USS Kidd and the production put a lot of money into the museum and repairs on the Kidd so she will be around for a lot longer.

I also agree, read The Good Shepard. It's a fast read and you won't want to put it down.

If you listen to the Dan Carlin Hardcore History podcast, he did a great interview with Tom Hanks about the movie. It's in his Hardcore History Addendum series.

It was pretty interesting how knowledgeable Tom Hanks is about history. He talks quite a bit about the historical projects he's done and some interesting things in the movie like the terminology they used and the challenge of trying to make it where the audience would understand how the ship functions and the terms they use. Great interview.

I haven't seen it yet. I'm really interested to see how they translated the big chunk of the book's narration that goes on in the Captain's head onto the screen.

Thanks all. I think I'll read the book first.

Good movie. It was unexpectly short in runtime, but I think that actually worked in the movie's advantage, which was to focus it solely on the hazards of escort duty in the North Atlantic. The visuals were well done.

I thought it was good. I'll take a 90min movie that cuts to the chase and leaves out most of the romance BS any day. Think how good Pearl Harbor would have been if the half of the movie devoted to a love triangle had been excised from the script?

I really enjoyed the movie. It was short for what we are all use to seeing today, but I was into it the whole time. Wife really liked to too. Now I have to go read the book.

Good movie. They stuck to life aboard a combat naval vessel and did a good job of portraying it. Its almost like they wanted us to know they didn't have time to worry about their own lives. Well done in that regard. I am still scratching my head over the slippers.

That being said, I will now pivot to Fletcher Class Destroyer Nerd. "Greyhound" would not have had the Fletcher "1945" configuration of 14 40mm. Its almost as if they must have digitized USS Kidd and didn't make the change. Also, DD's were mostly named for former Navy Officers. I will say I'm glad they used a hull number that doesn't seem to have been used, DD-548.

Also, I have never heard of "countermeasures" being used by a U-Boat.

Read the book. It explains the slippers.

In the book, "Greyhound" was the ship's radio callsign. The ship in the book was actually a Mahan class destroyer, which would have meant semi-open gun mounts.

Ships in the Atlantic would not have been nearly as AAA heavy as those in the Pacific, because the air threat was minimal to almost non-existant. The main threat posed by the German Condors was that they would just loiter, out of range, radioing a convoy's location, speed, and bearing to anyone with a radio.

The best my short stab at internet research came up with, all of the Mahan class were actually all employed in the Pacific, none in the Atlantic.

I liked it but it is in the category "I won't watch it again". That also applies to 1917.
