Thought y'all would like this.
I spoke with a WW2 vet at church today. Says he was on a transport headed to Europe and their convoy was lacking protection initially. Cold, miserable, rolling seas. They were all nervous at the beginning of their journey thinking they'd have no protection on the trip across. Suddenly at early light soldiers began shouting (Hallelujah! Yippee! We're saved!) and they all went to look at what he was shouting at.
The Battleship Texas was off their starboard side, majestically climbing the waves and back down in the valleys. High above them one moment, down below the next. Spray flying off of her bow. They all shook hands and slapped backs. They knew they'd be saved. He said he, being from Texas, couldn't keep but feeling home was coming with them. Loved it as a child and now it was there with them.
Has always loved the big ship because of that time in his life. Said it was the best ship in the war.
He served 3 years in Europe.
