i was talking with a gentleman about the adoption of the 13th Amendment and we were curious if it was ratified mostly to do away with the evils of slavery or was it to finally end the war? Thoughts?

The Congress passed it January 1865 and not ratified by most states by the end of 1865.

Wasn't ratified by Texas until 1870.

Kentucky didn't ratify it until 1976 and wasn't certified in Mississippi until 2013.

I would say the end of the war brought it to an end.
