Told my gf I believed him to be wearing an Aggie ring. She gives eye-roll. "How can you even tell?"

Looked it up later and it's Gerry Griffin, Flight Director for the Apollo missions. FTA Class of 1956.

Whoop!!!

He played the War Hymn for Alan Bean who was a graduate of Texas. This started the tradition of playing wake up music.

There have been a crapton of Aggies at NASA, including several flight directors.

I wish that were true, but the tradition dates back to December 1965 during Gemini VI.

https://history.nasa.gov/wakeup%20calls.pdf

ETA: Scrolling thru the listing, it looks like the high-water mark of wake-up calls was STS-7 (in June 1983), commanded by Bob Crippen, who is a longhorn. By that time, Gerry Griffin had been promoted to JSC Center Director. Every morning's wake-up call during that mission was the Aggie War Hymn.

Yes, of course, and several astronauts have advanced degrees from A&M. I was just focusing on Flight Directors, of which, a disproportionate number have been Ags.

My guess is that you can't throw a rock at NASA without hitting an Aggie.

Fossum posted on AO while stationed on the ISS.

I forget which poster set it up, but the poster was about to leave NASA and set everything up before his last day.

I met Gerry Griffin a few years ago at Spacefest. I got him to autograph a copy of that picture and add a "Gig 'Em" to it. He told me that his Aggie ring went up to the moon on one of the Apollo Missions. He donated it to A&M and it will be on display somewhere in the new Zachry.
