How long do you want to ignore this user?
My nephew, 12 years, popped up and said he wanted to read some historical fiction. Thought Master Commander series too advanced with the needed lexicon so settled on Killer Angels by Sharra. Any other ideas like maybe Sharpes Rifles?

I started reading Michener at age 15, but 12 might be doable. The Source, Hawaii, Poland, Alaska, Texas are some favorites. They are not great battle stories though.

The Sharpe series is fantastic!! Bernard Cornewell did a wonderful job. I discovered them as a freshman in HS and have read every one. Get him Sharpes Tiger and let him go.

Does it have to be fiction? This reads like it is:

I read Lehmanns book and loved it particularly the story when while not quite acclimated to his former society he witnesses a baptism scaring them off with his Indian antics.

Don't forget "Dead Mans Walk", "Comanche Moon", and "Streets of Laredo". All we're execellent reads.

Also a series I enjoyed was the Gettysburg trilogy alternate history books by Newt Gingrich/William Forstchen.

If want to try good ancient Rome fiction, look at the books from Colleen McCullough.

Oops, double-checking I see wanted it for grade-school. Disregard, those would probably be too heavy, lol.

Are you two saying those read well in a gripping, fiction-like manner, or are you saying they are `crap' -- as in `fiction not fact' --- and just little more than invention? You could read your posts either way???

Sounds like he might be a bit past it but if he hasn't ready Johnny Tremain that was a great read when I was a kid.

Agree on Master and Commander - started it this year and I can't go two pages without having to look something up!

You also might want to try the Horatio Hornblower series. They're fantastic.

One of my favorite books in Jr High. probably led me to go Naval Aviation. Fantastic story.

Also wrote Torpedo Run

As a matter of fact, I scoured the library [school and public] for every one of his books. He was a master storyteller.
