When Cortes gets to Mexico he burns his ships.



But I he was still somehow in contact with the Spanish in Cuba while fighting the Aztecs. How did he do this? How did he return to Cuba? Was it possible for soldiers and mercenaries to build new ships?

Was he in contact? The Spanish sent Narvaez to unseat Cortes in 1520 and failed, so they may have been aware of his progress/status via others but I don't think Cortes was in contact with Cuba/Spain during his campaign to take Tenochtitlan.

Exactly what Gota De Limon said, Cortez basically disobeyed orders by leaving on the expedition, so it is doubtful that he would communicate.

Under arrest as I recall, captured by Ponce De Leon the Fountain of Youth guy and sent back to Spain to plead his case with Charles V.
