I recently received one of those articles that are both interesting and almost unreadable; the most important dates/events in history. It had many of the same that younsee elsewhere: Norman Invasion, Magna Carta, First Crusade, etc. It is a pointless exercise since so many of these are dependent on previous events and dates but I thought of one that is fairly recent and still reverberates to this day that is absent from most lists and it is appropriate for today.

On September 29, 1941, the Jews of Kiev were led to a ravine outside the city called Babi Yar. There they were forced to give up their valuables, told to undress, and forced down the ravine. They were made to lay face down on the bodies of the previous victims and were shot in the back of the head. 33,771 jews were murdered in about 36 hours. Whole communities could be killed by German and local militias in Eastern Europe; a Final Solution was possible.

It's right after this that the Germans realized that they would have to "industrialize" the mass slaughter.
