On you-tube the other night I came across the Errol Flynn/Ronald Reagan movie "They Died With Their Boots On". There's a scene in it where a US Senator addresses the Corps at West Point wanting every cadet to sign a loyalty oath as this is just prior to the Civil War. Some Captain calls the southern cadets out, takes command and they march off while the band played Dixie. Is there any truth to that or is it just Hollywood?

The cadets did sign a loyalty oath in May of 1861. By that point all but a handful of Southern cadets had left. The ones who were still there did sign the oath. Southern cadets left slowly through the end of 1860 into 1861 and they usually left singly or in a small group.

Reagan wasn't in that movie with Errol Flynn.

It should be noted that West Point was seen as a truly unifying institution and cadets and teachers leaving was no small matter. It was also seen as a largely pro-Southern institution. O. O. Howard was once offered a teaching position at UNC and the offer letter explicitly assumed he was fine with slavery given that he taught at West Point.

If it was made in the 40s and 50s, expect the history to be really bad. Historical inaccuracy is never good, but they just rewrote stuff wholesale to make the story flow or hide inconvenient facts, etc. back then.
