While assigned to Top Gun, in an interview with Erich Hartman he was ask how he had so many Kills. His answer, couple turns and if they looked pretty good, I go look for another. Why? To many were, as you would call, Hamburgers!!! Hartman had 352 kills in WWII ( 345 on Russian Front and 7 American).
He flew over 1400 combat missions. Wasn't in Fighter until 1942. Interview/BS session took place in about 1975.

WarAgle, have you read Bloody April by Peter Hart? I think it would interest you. The British lost 275 planes in April 1917.
