Ankle Pain

Wanted to see if anyone has any ideas on what I might be dealing with. I randomly developed some pretty bad ankle pain. The ankle is swollen but not like crazy swollen. I can still see ankle definition. No bruising. When I wake up in the morning I can barely walk. I have to hobble and limp around for about 5-10 minutes and then it loosens up. It will hurt throughout the day but I'm at least mobile after that initial period. Been going on about 5 days.

Did I just sprain my ankle and not even know it? Or something else? I'm not aware that I injured it at all.

Any health changes recently? Previous ankle injury in younger days?

Nope nothing out of the ordinary. And no previous ankle injuries and only 30 so like to think I'm still on my younger days.

You would know if you sprained your ankle because you would remember it. There isn't enough info here to point to anything particular. I would say if it doesn't improve over the next week or gets worse go see your doctor and have it looked at more closely.

Had very similar symptoms a few weeks ago. Had logged a ton of miles training for a half and did an extra hike a few days after a long run.

After a week of pain I finally went to ER, no breaks so they said it was a sprain. Had a pretty good idea it wasn't because swelling was minimal and the pain was different than any other sprains I had before. Also with a sprain I felt like there was always an event I could point to that was the cause.

Went to an ankle orthopedic specialist, he X-ray'd again and nothing. Did a few tests in the first 5 minutes and determined it was tendinitis.

Currently in a boot for 3-4 weeks. Sucks getting old.

Thank you. It's better and I'm not wearing the boot but it definitely still has moments of pain where I forget about it and put all the pressure on it. Really sucks not being able to do my normal runs.

I had a really similar pain a few months ago. I didn't have a sprain incident, but that's what the doctor called it. Now I'm wondering if it was tendinitis! I took about a month off from activity and it feels about 95% now, about 3 months out.
