I am considering getting a Polar H9 as I start to run more. Would mainly be used to track calories.

My question is: Does your phone have to be nearby in order for the HRM and your phone to sync? Or could I have my phone in my car and have the HRM around my chest and have it still be tracking? I hate working out with my phone on me.

Im not sure, but you might consider getting a watch to do it. You can pair that with a chest strap HRM.

I dont use the version 9, but im guessing it works based on bluetooth. It might have the ability to store data and then sync to your phone later. Mine will sync to my watch durinf exercise and then watch will sync to phone after the activity.

What kind of watch do you have? I'm trying to minimize my expenses right now.

If your trying to save money, then using a HRM connected to phone is the lowest cost method. I have the Polar Vantage watch. Otherwise, there are lower cost watches from either Polar or Garmin that would meet your needs.
