Elbow issue, what doctor?

I've got a weird elbow issue that I suspect is nerve related. Sitting on a couch, or in a chair with my elbow bent causes the backside of my directly above my elbow, but below my tricep to ache/burn. It can get fairly bad, where I can't actually sit at a desk any longer. I don't think it's a "repetitive" use issue as I can be stationary on the couch. Also, when it's aching I can go work outside in the shop, swing hammers, work out, etc... and it starts to feel better.

It seems to come and go as well. I've had it happen a few times in the last couple of years.

Any suggestions on what kind of doctor to see?

Could be a cervical disc. I would look for an orthopedic group that has an upper extremity as well as a spine surgeon.

A doctor of physical therapy would be a great option. In Texas, they can do the eval even without a referral. If you then need further visits the PT can help you get the referral for your treatments. 48 other states and the US armed forces don't require the intermediate step and you can get the eval and treatment without the referral. Depends on where you live.

Go to a family med or sports med doc and get a referral to whoever he/she thinks is best.

Does moving your neck reproduce your elbow symptoms? If so, it is neck. But need to get a proper diagnosis first to rule out the elbow as the culprit.

Where are you located?

I'm in BCS. Whatever this is takes time for it to get aggravated. Meaning I don't think I could just move my neck and make it happen. The burning/ache also doesn't go away instantly. It always is gone by the morning when I wake up. It can bother me when I go to sleep until it subsides enough.

Going to try and make an appointment with a orthopedist I guess. I'm assuming a regular doc would just refer me there or to a physical therapist. I've got catastrophic health insurance, so going straight to a specialist makes more sense to me.

Do It go down to your fourth and fifth fingers. It could be your ulnar nerve.

Doesn't affect my fingers, only directly above the elbow on the backside. Thanks for the suggestion.
