It's about time to get this thread going again. I've been working on filling out my race schedule for next year after the unsuccessful Western States lottery, and I'm guessing many of you guys have been doing the same.
For 2019, the main goal is to finish my first 100 mile race. I was initially leaning towards Javelina or Rio del Lago because they are relatively flat, and late in the year which means that I could get in plenty of good training all year. But, I ended up registering for the Tahoe Rim Trail 100 in late July. It's much closer to home, and I'll be able to train on the course for much of June and July. It's technically a lottery, but close to 100% of the entrants get to run.
Last year, I think I raced a little bit too much. So this year I'm trying to thin out the race schedule and open up time for some dedicated training blocks uninterrupted with tapers, races, and recoveries. So far my year looks like this:
Jan: baby on the way
Mar: Way Too Cool 50k
Apr: American River 50 mile
July: TRT 100 mile
Aug: recover
Sept: knock out the TRT segments that I haven't yet completed or try some local FKT
I'll add in a few local 25k's and 30k's, but that's pretty much it for ultras. The big wild card is obviously the newborn baby girl. I'm about to hit 3000 miles for the 2nd straight year; I'm doubtful that will be happening again next year!
Happy trails!
