It's time to get the discussion going for next year's Western States 100.

The lottery registration closed yesterday, and the drawing for entry takes place on Saturday, December 1st. I'll be in the lottery for the first time. Anyone else anxiously awaiting their name to be drawn?

Year 6.

And another record year for lottery entrants. Will still have under a 50% chance of being selected. If I wasn't already this invested, I wouldn't even try.

I'll probably never enter this lottery. I would like to run the course one day though.

Put me down to help out if any of y'all get into the race. I volunteer at Foresthill (mile 62) every year during the race, but I can help with pre-race logistics or whatever.

Dang, that's rough. If I recall correctly, last year you would have had >50% chance of getting in with that many tickets. Good luck.

Wasn't that long ago 32 tickets was close to 80%.

How exactly does the lottery work? 32 tickets, so you have 32 "raffle tickets" to increase your odds? If you enter every year is there a point at which you're guaranteed to get in?

Figured I'd just post the image from the above link for everyone else. 1st year in the lottery gets you 1 ticket, 2nd = 2, 3rd = 4, 4th = 8, etc.... 7th = 64 tickets. Your number of tickets in the lottery gets reset to 0 if you get drawn and run the race.

2 years ago there were only 2 people who had 7 years worth of tickets and they both got drawn. Last year that jumped to 8 people. I was at the lottery last year, and I believe 1 or 2 of those folks did not get drawn so the RD asked the crowd if it was ok to put them #1 on the wait-list (basically guaranteed to get in) and everyone cheered, so he did it.

Now there's 30 people who have 7 years worth of tickets.

In the not too distant past, people getting to year 6 was the exception. I remember when there was one year 6 person who didn't get selected, and a sponsor immediately gave them their sponsor slot.

Good luck! We aren't sure if we're going to drive over to be there for the lottery. There's a big snowstorm coming tomorrow and I don't want to get stuck on the pass on I-80. If we do go, I'll try to post pics.

Steven Moore (one of my teammates) got in.

Time to figure out what race I'm going to go do completely uninspired.

Once I stop being a little ***** about not getting in, i'll put on my big boy pants and figure out what qualifier I'm going to run.

Leadville 100
TRT 100
Never Summer 100K
Kettle Moraine 100
San Diego 100
Wasatch 100

probably a few others as well. I'd like to avoid training through the summer, at least as much as possible, but with a few of those, it'd be a decent amount of Summer running. Of course several of the above are lotteries, so they aren't guaranteed. I'd only enter one lottery race, as I don't want to get in to multiple.

Me too. I definitely want to run my first 100 miler next year. My list is:

TRT, San Diego, Javelina, or Rio del Lago

I really want to throw my name in the hat for Leadville, but you don't find out about results until mid jan. At that point, its too late for all the other lotteries.

SD100 isn't too hard to get into. I kind of want to go out there since I registered last year and didn't get to race it. Timing is actually pretty good.

however, part of me wants to just knock out a 100K.

Regardless, I want to be in the mountains...the exception is Kettle b/c it is close to Madison and that's where my wife's twin sister lives. Its potentially and easy sell, though I might be going solo to any race anyway.
