But you're in luck, because training in heat is the next best thing to elevation. You just have to wait until late summer.

So, while I've never used one of those masks, I have run with a t-shirt like fabric wrapped around my mouth/nose. That was a difficult run, and I think it was because I had all that additional resistance to suck air through. If you really want to give it a go, try out that maybe? You'll still probably look weird, unless it's cold out, then people might not look at you as funny.

No trip planned or anything, just trying to increase workout endurance.

And throw in some intervals with your distance runs.

I used to see guys hiking Squaw Peak with those masks on. I was always wondering what they were doing...as I passed them going up...and then again on my way down...while they were still going up. Getting into better shape > trying to use some sort of device for a short cut.
