This is my first winter running. Ladies and guys with ladies, what do you (or your lady) prefer to wear in cooler and rainy weather? I went out for a run today, and while I was not uncomfortable, I know that my attire was not the best. What do the pros wear in this type of weather?

Where are you?

I live in Dallas and at its worst I'm wearing tights and a light jacket. Most times a long sleeve shirt, gloves, and shorts is enough. Winter wear is very much a personal preference. You'll see people wearing jackets once it gets below 65 and you'll have ppl who will still go singlet with 40s and 30s.

Agree with Pilot. I like to cover my ears, too, though.

I'm in Portland, OR, so it's going to be pretty drizzly quite a bit, and in the 50s/low 60s.

I will first put on a longsleeve shirt, then gloves, then a shortsleeve shirt over my longsleeve shirt. I don't usually put on pants until it is in the 30s. I hardly ever wear a jacket while running. I will wear a knit cap if my ears are cold. If it is drizzly/rainy when I am running, I will wear a baseball cap to keep the rain out of my eyes.

I've run up there quote a bit in winter. I'd just wear whatever I'd normally wear to stay warm, which would vary by temp. Then, if drizzly, which is likely that time of year, I'd add a light shell to stay somewhat dry. I'd also wear a running hat to keep water out of my bcc eyes.

In Portland, I'd just invest in a good rain jacket. Make sure it breathes well. I don't think you'll need much in terms of cold weather gear, but this varies by person.

Definitely will need some cold weather gear, but nothing too crazy. I did run in the 20s and 30s at times.

The rule I heard was dress like you would for 20 degree warmer weather as far as layering. I love my dry leggings. check out the trail running gear since that will be more aimed at keeping you dry. See you in Vegas, I am so behind my miles.

I try remember that if I'm comfortable in the first mile, I'll be burning up after mile 2. If I'm cold in mile one, I'll be comfortable later.

For me it goes hat (bald guy), gloves, long sleeves, tights, jacket, treadmill. Sun vs shade vs dark make a big difference, as does wind, and humidity / rain.

This year I'm asking for a wind vest for Christmas.

send me an email when you decide what you want - and I'll get you a pass to the employee store

I'm sure RnR hasn't sent anything out yet, but I'm curious how they'll handle the race with everything that happened yesterday. The shooting occurred where they have the race concert and is right next to the start line. Its been bothering me all day having been right there multiple in times in a massive crowd.

Thanks! Will do.

RnR did send out a generic email saying that their thoughts were with the victims and that they would visit changes that need to be made when the time is appropriate. I think they normally have pretty good security for this anyway though. I'm sure a lot of people have already backed out, but something like this could sadly happen anywhere, at any time. It honestly hadn't even crossed our minds to change our plans.

They sent out that it is time for taking care of those affected by the incident and would evaluate later.

They had a lot of crazy responses on the facebook page. I think everyone that shows up to run will be great.

Start with layers and mile loops. Each mile shed whatever you need until you get it dialed in.

I sort of did that during the summer. I'm sure a lot of people thought I was just some crazy person flailing around with a shirt over her head while running.

It's going to be in the 30s for my 5k next week. It will be my coldest run. I didn't really want to figure things on on a race, but so it goes.

I can't emphasize this enough. I get cold really easily, but I really go easy on warm clothes running in the cold. Gloves, maybe a stocking hat to cover my ears if there's a breeze, long-sleeved tech shirt, and shorts.

The problem for me is cooling off after I'm finished running. I got the shakes pretty bad driving home after a run during the lone cold snap we had last winter.

I like the under armour compression shirts that have a turtleneck + light running gloves if it's sub 40. Otherwise I'm going to light on fire and I just wear a singlet.

I was going to say this. you can never go wrong shedding layers. I live in a small town and run early in the morning, so often I will shed something on the side of the road then come back and get it. I know that doesn't work for everyone, but drop spots are helpful. and of course you can do that if you are running a loop.

I ran a marathon in a downpour once. I started with a rain jacket, but didn't need it after about 5 miles. What do you do? you ditch it off the side of a bridge and hope it is there when you come back after the race. Luckily it was still there.

Everyone is different but here's what I do...

Above 50 degrees - shorts and short sleeve
mid to high 40's - shorts and long sleeve tech tee
low to mid 40's - shorts and very light (breathable) jacket and gloves and ear protection
30's - tights and very light jacket and gloves and ear protection
below 30 - I'm more than likely on the treadmill

It's tough to say "in this temperature wear X but wear Y when it's colder" because humidity/moisture and moreso wind can have a huge impact. I spend most of my summers running in the mountains where we fight high winds, cooler temperatures, and afternoon showers.

It was 19 degrees at the start of the Bandera 50K back in January . I wore a pair of running tights with windstopper paneling on the front while my friend wore shorts. To each their own, I guess.

My wife and I are big fans of arm sleeves and short sleeve shirts. With arm sleeves, you have them out and then slowly lower them down to your wrist as you warm up. Unlike a second layer, you don't have two layers covering your armpits and torso where you are probably already warm. And unlike a long sleeve shirt, you aren't having to fight sleeves falling down. If I know that I'll be in long sleeves the whole time, I'll probably wear a half-zip so I can zip down to regulate temperature.

For windy days with no rain, I'll throw in a Patagonia Houdini jacket. It's small enough to fit in a waist band or larger pocket. For days that I know I'll be getting wet, I have a North Face HyperAir GTX (Goretex Active jacket) which is designed to be waterproof but, relatively speaking for anything waterproof, more breathable. Both of these are available in mens and womens fits.

Also, some type of gloves but it's a balance of keeping your hands warm and dry vs having hot and sweaty hands from too much warmth and lack of breathability. Same goes for a hat or beanie. I'll also carry a buff in a pocket as you can never have too many buffs during a winter run.

oh no. My husband is still doing the full. He is on his taper now. I did something weird to my knee yesterday. I hope it gets better quickly. I may be hobbling for 13 miles.

I've been traveling back and forth to Asia and other poor time management problems. It is for the best. This is my first trip to Vegas, and running a marathon might be a little much. 2018 Marathon here I come.

I hate when my legs are cold but fine with my arms being more-so.

Thanks, my wonderful in-laws decided to join us in Vegas so just about every minute is booked unless I run away. I cannot complain too much since they picked up the bill for the hotel. Of course it would have been nice if they knew when the race was when they started booking things.

when are you guys arriving and doing packet pickup.

I'm going to request a change of corral when I get to packet pickup. I'm doing packet pickup Friday afternoon as well.

I'm in the green wave in corral 11. Husband is in blue wave in corral 3.
Not sure what time we will be at the expo, but we were planning on heading over after we grab some lunch.
