Testosterone Replacement Therapy?

33 y/o Male here. I had my 1st physical in about 10 years last week, and the blood work from the lab came back normal with everything except for testosterone levels- all were low. I am having blood drawn again next week to confirm, but was curious if anyone on the board has undergone testosterone replacement therapy before?

Also, is this something I should pursue a specialist for, rather than see my regular doctor for?

Any advice is appreciated.

You should research it heavily and go see an endocrinologist.

I do and fully agree with the statement above. Go see a specialist (a specialist is not a low T center).

Also see a urologist and ask about having an ultrasound to check for varicoceles.

I'm 31 now. Was in the same situation last year. Went and had it confirmed at a Urologist. He presented a few options and I went with the cheapest first because my insurance didn't cover it. He prescribed me Clomid. I take half a pill every day.

In 5 weeks I went from 208 to 920. That's a lot higher leap than what he expected. He said most of his patients get a boost to 600-700.

Clomid tells the body to produce more testosterone rather than TRT which shuts down your bodies production of test.

HTH... Don't go to Low T or any derivative of that. They're paid to sell TRT, and don't have your best interests at heart.

RedlineAg08- Did you notice a difference in how you felt physically after starting the Clomid?

In a word, yes...

It's not a miracle pill that turns you 18 again like the bs Low T ads say. If you don't have a problem you probably won't notice any difference. I still feel 31, but I couldn't make it through a day without crashing, I wasn't recovering worth a **** after a workout despite trying everything under the sun. That's all back to normal.

Checking my test levels was a last ditch effort. Never expected that I was low.

Lifting weights is the best testosterone booster.

Mine is low. I'm 58 so that's to be expected, but I think it's even lower than it should be for my age.

I could try Clomid, but my wife took it once and we know have twin kids.

Yeah, may be best for you to get TRT.

I lift weights everyday.

Same here. Waiting on the insurance company and the doctor to do their thing. Prescription is sitting at the pharmacy.

Where are you located? If in Dallas Or East Texas, I could suggest a good urologist.

Do you have kids or want more kids? If so, testosterone may not be the answer. When someone takes testosterone, sperm production and your own body's testosterone production are both dramatically reduced. Something to consider.

Also, do you have any symptoms? You didn't mention any on the OP.

Just got a 2nd round of blood work done, both LH and FSH were on the low end of the lab range, prolactin and estradiol were normal, and confirmed the findings of low Test. Dr referred me to an endocrinologist, but they can't see me until mid August.

Symptom wise, I have always said I "felt fine" however if this is something that has been going on for a long time my "fine" or "normal" would be skewed. I have noticed in the last couple of years that I just don't recover as well as I used to when I was in my early 20's after workouts, takes a lot of effort to lose weight (perfect diet, no drinking, consistent hard working out - if one of those dips the slightest progress stalls). I have noticed that I have a hard time concentrating at work once I started to think about it more. I still lift weights 4x/week.

I am in Dallas, and am open to recommendations to Drs in the area that I could see sooner or that have a lot of practice in treating this.

What is so odd about this is that my wife and I had our first kid in April, and we got pregnant right out the gates (pulled goalie in June, pregnant in July). Right now the 12 week old is making having one kid look really appealing . . .

Hearing about guys in their early 30s with low T having a difficult time is depressing.

Amen. When Oakland complained about not recovering "as well as I used to in my 20's", I laughed out loud. Wait till you're almost 60.

Considering you have low fsh and lh, it's more of an endocrine issue vs a testicle issue so seeing an Endo makes sense. With that being said, most urologists in the area are accustomed to seeing patients no matter the cause of their hypogonadism.

I would suggest seeing Dr Dan French in Dallas. He's a urologist that specializes in male infertility, amongst other things. Extremely smart physician, well versed in hypogonadism treatment, and he's also an Aggie...which really doesn't matter but hey at least you can BS with him about Aggie football. His nurses are great too.

With your age and situation, he'd be perfect. He'll talk you through all the options for sure. Also...he does vasectomies if you want to ensure you only have one kid!

By the way, I'm not Dan French but I do know him since I work in healthcare.

Thanks for the referral Oregon- I will keep him in mind if I feel like I need a 2nd opinion or need a vasectomy. I was able to get an appointment this week with another Endo practice, so hoping to find out more and get a treatment plan started soon.

Moore- apparently I have the testosterone levels of a 100+-year-old man (<200), so I am no longer looking forward to being 60. After this, I am just glad I can recover at all! There is a difference between being old and having something out of balance.

But seriously- I wish I had been asking to have my testosterone levels checked when I was in my 20's and had been more diligent with getting a regular physical. There is a difference between being old and having something out of balance. There is a difference between being/getting old and having something out of balance. You just never know what can turn up.

I did trt through my family doc for a couple years. Was happy with the results but had the side effect of really bad back and chest acne. The results are a little hard to quantify really. After trying a number of things for the acne that did not help, I decided to stop the treatment and gradually phased off.

Interestingly, I cannot say I feel that much differently.
