I really want to train for a half marathon and complete one. I am pretty novice. In good shape, but not a long distance runner type.

I want a new goal for 2017. I have always been very into working out. Mostly crossfit the last year.

Anyways, I would love to get a recommendation on a really cool one somewhere in the U.S. that I can travel to and make a vacation out of it with my wife.

Any recommendations? Any time from April-July would be best.

thanks!

depends on what your criteria is for the "best."

my suggestion would be to figure out where you want to go on vacation and then search for races in the area.

I guess I just mean best views, weather for that time of year, overall event, etc.

I know nothing about it but San Diego would be on my short list.

We ran in Anchorage last year. Race is mid June, great vacation!

Yep.

San Francisco in late July as well if you want a challenge.

If you are looking at scenery, several National Parks have races that time of year.

Grand Tetons is in June.
Yellowstone is in June
Rocky Mountains in August
Crater Lake is in August

Here is the place that puts the races on.

just know that none of the races are actually IN the parks. they are just outside the parks.

still, a great option if you want to combine a race and a vacation to a NP.

Yeah I forget to mention it. They are always on the doorstep.

I've run the Rocky Mountain and Glacier races

San Fran jumped into my mind. Two options available. First half one goes over the Golden Gate Bridge and the second half one goes through more of the neighborhoods

the travel is pretty expensive for a lot of the really cool races. Makes it a very pricey trip to bring the wife haha.

I'm not a fan of the Rock N Roll Series, but I enjoyed the RNR Seattle Half (June).

also..what do you think about me running in Steamboat? I am pretty novice. But I am athletic and I will train really hard for this.

do you think the altitude would be too much for me on my first one?

Depends on how well you adapt to the altitude. I handle altitude pretty well and usually only take a day to adjust while others can take long. I've never been to Steamboat Springs nor climbed in that part of CO, but it is at around 7k so it is low enough that you may not feel it until you are actually running. Looks like a downhill race the whole way so I'd be more worried about my knees than anything else. I think its doable, you just may not feel very good doing it compared to something at lower altitude.

If you do one at altitude. I'd recommend getting there several days before hand to let yourself at least start to adapt to height.

good advice...thanks. Sounds like I may steer clear of that one.

I love all the national park races, but as I stated above, the accessibility is the concern there.
