We put in an order for a Lexus GX 550 to replace my wife's 2023 Escalade that we are ready to move on from. Very excited but will need to wait 9 mo for it.

My car is a fun little Mercedes SL400 hardtop convertible but it's 9 now and having some issues and I'm ready to get something badass that isn't a car or a truck. And now I can't get a GX550 because we don't want 2.

Recently test drove the INEOS Grenadier and LOVE the look of it. No remote start and no air conditioned seats though, which I don't like for Houston living.

Y'all have any recommendations in the 'manly badass vehicle' space that's under $100k?

I don't fit well in jeeps. Didn't like the new bronco. Kind of stuck on what to test drive / look into. Help!

Is that sarcasm because those things are not reliable? The interwebs tell me Land Rover brand is not reliable but I'm open to perspectives, especially if they have a good warranty

IMHO, run away from the Land Rover and toward a Land Cruiser. I have a strong love for British autos, but I wouldn't own one as my daily - I used to DD a Triumph Spitfire.

The Lexus gs550 is a fancy land cruiser so I'm currently thinking it is redundant with what we have on order

I can't speak for every land rover in the world but I own a defender and a discovery and they are the two best cars I have ever owned.

The Defender has broken 2 windshields and nothing else. Only 15k miles though so why would anything have gone wrong. I really like that car. Just don't get the sissy engine in it. I replaced the stock tires with duratracs and it made the car 10x better. No idea why they spec the Defender with crappy tires.

The Discovery has had a bad hood release cable and the alternator went out at 60k miles. We have also replaced a windshield on it, but this is to be expected on the Colorado Front Range since the rock is granite. This car just does everything well. It tows 8200 pounds, it rides like a 5 series, and it gets 22 mpg legitimately. I went up a tire size to 275s and it just made me like it more. Since I replaced the sissy tires with the better ones it does real well off road. Went with BFG trail terrain as they are the best snow tire made that isn't an actual snow tire. I have driven it through 2 feet of fresh snow with zero issues.


I will keep the disco until my son turns 16 and then I will give it to him and buy a Defender V8 or Octa. The P525 Defender 110 with 1.5 inch Johnson rods and real tires is just so dang good. Cold weather pack, the baddest meridian stereo made, and the method wheels. That would be a beast! Hard to find a real v8 anymore. The Octa is just silly, but it is a damn cool silly.


Just to add... I have owned about 50 cars in my life including BMW 535, 4 runner, wrangler, 5 tahoes, 2 suburbans, wrx, porsche macan, couple of Mercedes, f150s, rams, silverados, tacoma, t100, all kinds of VWs, etc etc. I would take a Defender over any of them.

Last thing I will add. A defender is expensive and made to go off road for real. There is absolutely zero reason to own one in Texas and it is a stupid mall hopper. If you are Texas Mall Hoppers just get a highlander.

That's a lot of edits, but no - I am hoping for something with 4x4 functionality after many years of driving a small car. I'm really considering the ineos but yeah, air conditioned seats are nice when you have to park on the driveway in the summer in Houston. I don't want a basic truck, I've owned several in the past.

Very helpful post, thanks for the info! I've never driven a defender, I'll go check one out. I go hunting on ranches routinely and like having off road abilities, so I've been borrowing my brother's truck when needed and I'm wanting to transition to something more rugged than my current sports car

Happy Disco owner here as well. My dad has owned several Range Rovers. All have been very satisfying and reliable.

Really the only negative I have with the defender is the stock tires. They stock them with street tires. Put on some duratracs or ko3 in one size larger and it becomes a great car

I have a 2016 4Runner Limited, my wife has a 2019 Kicks (Nissan), my mom has a new Buick Enclave, and my stepfather has his deceased father's 2000 Expedition (Ford).

I went through this two years ago and landed on a Jeep GC 4xe Trailhawk. That ownership experience was so great that I finalized a deal on a 2025 Land Cruiser this morning. The Grenadier looks great, but from what I've been told the driving experience isn't that great.
