If you had 35k to spend on a NEW small 4x4 which would you choose...

A. Nissan Frontier
B. Ford Ranger
C. Chevy Colorado
D. Jeep Wrangler
E. Something else

Caveat, would be used offroad so something like an AWD Maverick probably not the best.

Do you need a pickup truck bed for hauling stuff?
Can you live with a manual transmission?

Are you looking to keep it pretty stock, or do upgrades in the future?
Do you prefer rubber ducks or cutesy IG stickers?

You're going to struggle to find a new Jeep Wrangler for that much but you might be able to get into a basic 6G Bronco for close to $35k.

Might also consider a Bronco Sport, they're not terrible.

I've seen a lot of positives on the Nissan.

A, B, or C based on what you like the looks of best.

Frontier seems to be a long-term stable platform that they haven't messed with too much. Probably where I'd lean.

Don't buy anything CDJR.

Bed is nice but maybe not totally necessary
Manual would be fine
Stock mostly. Maybe a bed cap

Frontier or Ridgeline if new or super low miles

But a used Tacoma would be the best

I forgot about broncos. A base model 2 door would be about 35k huh?

Eta: looks like closer to 40k

Nissan Frontier would be my choice. I love the way they look and that engine is suppose to be one of the best. But Ive never owned one.

Recently bought in this market and went with the new Colorado. It was simply better than the frontier and Tacoma after test driving them. That 2.7 turbo is fun as hell to drive. Though with a $35k limit you'll be in one of the lower trims.

I saw a Jimny in the Shinkansen train station in Osaka back in 2019.

The picture doesn't do justice to how small it is.

I have a 2016 4Runner, my wife has a 2019 Nissan Kicks, my mom has a new Buick Enclave, and my stepfather has his deceased father's 2000 Expedition (Ford).

yes. I have a '96 Tacoma that still gets limited duty. But, I'm looking for a daily driver for a 100 mile/day commute that can also do deer lease duty if needed.

I think I'd just go with a Nissan Frontier. Have you test driven one? I've never been inside one...just curious about fit and finish.

I haven't test driven one, but that's kind of what I'm leaning towards. Although those new Rangers look pretty nice inside.

Since the Frontier is the last of the old school naturally aspirated V-6s I would go that route.

I don't think there is a better option than that.

Disagree. I think the Frontier has lapped the Tacoma, and I'm not sure it is even close.

I owned a 2014 Tacoma. It was a good vehicle, but not a great one. Reliable as hell, sure, but there were still some annoyances with build quality. I think this era was before Toyota got serious about making the Tacoma anywhere near a luxury vehicle -- no power seat option, no factory leather, no push button start, etc. Some might not care, but the thinking was, if you want all that, go get a Tundra. But what if you wanted a Tacoma to fit in your garage better and only needed the pickup area a small part of the time?

Sadly, the drawbacks were too numerous for me and I got rid of it a year and a half later. The engine, for one, was a bit on the weak side. It got on the highway fine, but passing at 70+ was borderline awful. I had to give 2 weeks notice, it seemed, to pass anyone. I think the horse/torque on the Nissan fixes that. The Tacoma's gas mileage wasn't great, and I think, again, the Nissan gets better mileage now. The Nissan easily beats the previous generations of Tacomas in creature comforts, so that leaves ride and reliability. The former is likely a wash and the latter, given Toyota's recent setbacks, likely is too.

If you're buying a pickup as an ADDITIONAL vehicle, then yes, I'd go with a 10-15 year old Tacoma over the Frontier. In that case, I'd concede THAT argument isn't close. But today, go with the Nissan.
