Got my oil changed today - full synthetic 5w-30. First time needing to pay for an oil change as I've previously been taking to the dealership since I had a pre-set number of included maintenance.

I was a bit surprised by the cost - about $125 including labor. it was about 7qts of oil and the filter was $10. Is this pretty standard now adays?

I do my own and it still costs me about $70-80 with filter so yeah I'd assume getting someone else to do it would cost that much.

My DFW area GMC dealer is $69 for oil change & tire rotation. 8qts of FS.

I got my oil and filter changed on my 6.7 F250 a few weeks back for $89.99 at the local Toot'n Totum. It came with a free car wash and a coupon for a free oil change the next time I come in. I felt like I had robbed the place when I walked out of there.

I pay $70-80 at the dealer. Includes tire rotation.

Is this for a semi? A jug of oil is like $20.

Not anymore. I buy Castrol edge 5qt jugs at Walmart and they're now $31 each. Buy 2 since I need 8 quarts and a $9 filter. $75-80 for an oil change.

Dang. I was charged $89.99 for the same oil change a month ago. Never going to the dealer for an oil change again though. Spilled oil on the motor when filling it and tightened the drain plug as well as the filter like a ****ing gorilla. Thought I'd save time since it included a tire rotation. Wrong on that assumption

~$10/quart + filter + half hour labor

This checks out, depending on the oil they used.

Yep.

Mobil 1 went up about 20-25%

I know right?!?!? Yesterday I spent $180. Never have spent that much before.

So....

This raises a question, still change oil every 5000 miles or so?

Change oil every 3 months? 6? once a year?

Can we trust Mobil-1 15,000 - 20,000 mile oils?

Or suck it up and continue the same regimen but just pay up because if not, the engine will blow up at 89,000 miles?

Tundras recommended interval is 10k miles

almost 30 years ago, we had a BMW 325 and we followed the maintenance required light on the dash and it had us change the oil at about every 10,000+ miles.

Great question.

I drove a 2005 5.3L Tahoe 125k or so changing when the oil monitor got to 10%. Sometimes this was 13k-14k miles. Mobil 1 with Wix filters from the first change onward.

My 2019 and 2021 5.3 GMC oil monitors want a change closer to 5500-6000. I would figure that oils would be better now and could go longer, but at least until I'm out of warranty I'm not stretching.

'13 F150 Boost 195K - took it to the dealer for The Works each oil change when the monitor said to. Never a problem.

'19 F150 Boost(3.5) - doing the same thing and at 95K, no problems.

Dash monitor started at around 10K miles ( a little less) and got to around 7500 mile interval as the miles piled up.

Never a leak and never a "Check Engine" light.

$65 for 5 quarts synthetic at local independent shop.

My Silverado 5.3 has the OLM set to about 7,500. For me that's about 12 weeks, and stretching it to 10,000 miles would save me about one oil change per year. Doesn't seem worth the pain in the ass to me as pushing to 10,000 will throw off my oil change and tire rotation being done at the same time. Just my 2 cents.

I've run Rotella in my 12 valve since I got it 200,000 miles & 8 years ago. A gallon of it went from $12 to now nearly $18. The thing leaks so much I just buy the cheapest oil I can find. Walmart sold 2-1/2 gallon jugs for around $20 but those have gone up now too. Even the tractor supply brand is high now. BIDENFLATION

It is almost $200 for an oil change in my F250 diesel. It takes 15 quarts of full synthetic. Only have to change it every 10,000 miles though

Gas prices are still up about a dollar a gallon from when Trump left office.

I'm paying $2.30 for regular but it was probably lower 2 years ago when nobody was driving nor going to work. Possibly Bidens old senile ass, possibly global who knows.

Seriously,

Oil change interval discussion brings passionate opinions of anecdotes.

What does the science say??

I guess I could google..

Semi-synthetic oil/filter/lube on the '14 GMC Terrain earlier this week at local indy shop. $47.
Full synthetic on my car a few months back at different local indy shop. $75.

GMC dealer sends out coupons for full synthetic for $70. Sometimes includes tire rotation. Problem is they are short staffed so walk-ups are next to impossible.

I run Mobil Delvac in my F250. 25 dollars a gallon and I need 14 qts. So the oil alone for it costs almost 100 bucks with tax. Filter is another 15. I change it myself though. No other **** scratchers have been on the drain plug except mine.

Needless the say, the diesel sits in the garage on a trickle charger until we need it for hauling something.

I buy Shell Rotella T6 Full Synthetic 5W-40 Diesel Engine Oil for by 6.7 Powerstroke. I buy the 1 Gallon jugs. 4 one gallon jugs and that sets me back $110 bucks. Use a upgraded Wix XP oil filter and they run about $25 bucks. So $135 bucks total and I change my own oil which only takes about 20 minutes.

Pretty much. I should have had cancer about 86 times already from all the Cali warning labels on consumer products over my lifetime.

Depending on where you are at the GMC dealership by me (Texan) does 3 oil changes, tire rotations, and a car wash for like $140. I consider it buy 2 get 1 free for my truck.

Last oil change was $700...

Of course that included pulling the pan, cleaning everything, and replacing the pan gasket. 2014 F150 with 130,000 decided to just nope the pan gasket and start dripping oil everywhere it went.

Depends on the vehicle and use. Most are fine with 10 or even 15k mile intervals. Right now we have the 3.5 boost, and I try to keep mine to 5-6k ish interval. If you want to be scientific, send of samples to blackstone.

ETA- $80 for an oil change? Don't you Texags?! I have never paid more than 15 bucks for a jug of full synthetic. Buy all my filters from rockauto in bulk usually. I bought a ton of the rotella gas truck for closer to 10 a jug, thanks to 1ags tip. Slickdeals is a good place to watch for oil throughout the year. I use two jugs, but obviously keep the second jug for the next change. Maybe 25-30 bucks a change or so? At that price, I find no need to stretch intervals.

I sent in my oil to Blackstone for Toyota Avalon at 12,000 miles (Mobil-1 15,000 mile Synthetic). I have posted this before but there were criticisms of Blackstone and their report.

Here's their response.
Quote:

Toyota engines tend to wear quite well and your 3.5L engine is no exception. Universal averages show typical metal readings after about 6,700 miles on the oil. You put 12,000 miles on this fill and wear still looks great. Impressive, even! There are no problems here - this engine is still going strong. No contamination was found that might be a concern, and the oil itself held up well. No fuel or moisture was found, and silicon and insolubles show normal air and oil filtration. Go ahead and to 15,000 miles next time. Iron will increase slightly, but all else should hold steady.
