Need some help. My daughter's 2014 VW Tiguan check engine light came on this morning. Car's idle is erratic - running a little higher than normal.

Car has 75,000 miles, its been maintained per VW schedule, run premium gas.

Went by O'Reilly's and Auto Zone and got the codes read. Two codes keep repeating.
  • P2187 - system too lean at idle bank 1
  • P0507 - idle control system - RPM higher than expected

Getting different "opinions" from the two stores.

O'Reilly is suggesting I replace the "positive crankcase ventilation oil separator" ($175)

Gates Vent Valve - EMH 912

Auto Zone it suggesting I replace the "mass air flow sensor" ($199)

Hitachi Mass Air Flow Sensor (OEM) - MAF0051

I'm leaning towards the Mass Air Flow Sensor - Curious if anyone has experienced these codes in the VW 2.0L engine. Trying not to just throw parts ($$$) at a problem.

Googling indicates that it's most likely a PCV valve issue. An issue with MAF would likely throw a MAF specific code as well.

Spent some time googling also... Agree - Sounds like its probably the PCV valve/system. Going to start there.

Leave it to the Germans to overengineer a PCV valve that doesn't last and costs $150+ to replace....

For future reference, always check with ross-tech's wiki when trying to identify VAG-specific codes:

http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/18619/P2187/008583

http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/16891/P0507/001287

Looks like your PCV is acting up. Does the crank case create a vacuum when running? Try to remove the oil filler cap and see if the engine tries to suck it back down.

In any case, I would replace the PCV system with something more legit than the O'Reilly special. Check this link and confirm the year/engine/drivetrain match before purchasing.

Thanks for the links/info Flaith

This is my first VW vehicle in the fleet - it's taken me a while to find good resources for service.

Will bookmark this for future - Thx SW86

Dont buy from Oreillys

https://www.fcpeuro.com/Volkswagen-parts/Tiguan/?year=2014&m=49&e=2054&t=5&b=11&d=1036&v=&keywords=pcv

Lifetime warranty on everything they sell and cheaper and correct parts.

FCPEuro is also a good online store along with ECSTuning, the latter being a little more VAG-tastic.

Wanted to follow up w y'all.
It was the PCV oil separator. Replaced. Reset codes. Runs like it should.

Appreciate the support/comments/links. SW'86

Smoke test and check for vacuum leaks is your first start for a lean condition.
