I have a 92 4Runner and it is turning over but not starting. Looking to borrow an obd1 scanner!

I am also accepting advice on potential issues because I am a beginner.

My experience is with GM, but on OBD1 (ALDL connector) you could short one of the terminals to ground and then you would get codes displayed via flashing of the CEL in a specific pattern. Kludgy, but it worked.

Is the check engine light on? If so, you can unfold a paperclip and plug it into pins E1 and TE1 in the diagnostic port near the battery. Turn everything (lights, a/c, stereo, etc.) off then turn the key to the On position. Count the flashes of the CEL to get the codes.

Or, you can see if the local Autozone or O'Reilly's has a scanner you can use.

Fuel, air, spark. You can assume that it is getting air. Check for spark by pulling a plug and looking for spark as it cranks. If you have spark, you're missing fuel. Most likely culprit is the fuel pump. Check the fuse and wiring before dropping the tank.

Getting spark ?

I've seen a no start issue caused more than once from a faulty alarm kill start feature. One was aftermarket on a dodge, other was factory on a Toyota 4Runner

If I remember correctly, those have an IAC. If it's stuck you won't get airflow when your throttle body is closed. Try pushing the gas pedal just enough to open the throttle body a little when you turn it over and see if it fires up.

I've been bitten before by a faulty fuel pump relay, and that's a damn easy fix. After you've found it, try swapping one of the other (identical) relays and give it a try.

It costs you $0.00 and hardly any time.
