Texags knows stuff...

My 2012 4x4 just started having a click or tick noise from the what sounds like the rear drive train. It happens when I hit the gas but doesn't happen when I let off or brake. Really noticeable at lower speeds and clicks frequency seem related to speed.

I checked for any zip ties friends may have pranked me but didn't notice anything.

I read on Tacoma world u-joints May be a cause? Is that an easy diy fix?

The truck doesn't feel any different when driving.

U joints are possibility.

Check for grease fittings and grease them. Check manual for right grease type.

If it has two piece driveshaft could also be slip yoke or carrier.

Start cheap and easy though:

Take off rear tires and inspect for debris or anything making the noise.

Also

I had a stick jammed into a skid plate on a 4runner and it would make a click noise as the front drive shaft turned .

If it just started happening it's likely some kind of debris.

Think it's the u joint as well after more reading and visual inspection.

On the way home yesterday the sound was minimized but there was a rough "get up" vibration when putting into gear after a red light.

I don't have to proper tools but know a close mechanic that will help me out.

Didn't notice any debris, thanks for the response

Does it do it in neutral or park, just revving?

Coastrs,

I'd be surprised if your u joints are out on a 2012 2nd gen Tacoma...unless you've got dozens of trips to Ouray, Moab, or Northern Az.

One way to check quickly and with no tools--climb under the truck and rotate the driveshaft back and fourth.
If the joints are bad the drive shaft will rotate quite a ways. It may make noise too.

Only when revving. I didn't notice it either in reverse.

And of course in typical fashion, On my way to work today it stopped. I cancelled my appointment with the Mechanic because of a job site meeting but will continue to monitor and try your recommendation fixer. Maybe a piece of debris came loose that I couldn't visibly see

Again. It drives completely fine, minus a very small stutter when accelerating from a red light (stutter is around 10mph) but nothing that concerns me. It's only noticeable because I became very paranoid.

Will update if anything changes

Check the driveshaft yokes for lube.

Our 4 runner made a noise similar, took it in, and found out the slip yoke(s) were getting dry. Same dealer that had been servicing it since new. No explanation why getting dry when inquired. Looked at manual, supposed to be lubed every 5k.

BS, they just did not do it. Red face applicable.
