What POS should I drive now?

Looking for a sub $8k daily driver mainly to be used for my drive to and from work. The office is about 1 1/4 miles from the house, so by my math that comes out to less than 1500 miles/year counting two round trips a day between home and work. Let's say double that to cover any other miscellaneous errand running around the neighborhood. Also, I'm not anticipating any highway driving with this vehicle except on very rare occasions.

Try as I might, I can't seem to make my wife believe that Miata Is Always The Answer, mainly due to this crazy notion she has that I might need to haul more than one of our kids at a time every now and again. That being said, I need room for 3-4 people. Am I doomed to buy a sensible Japanese econobox with INT_MAX miles on it, or are there more fun options in my budget? If so, what mileage range should I be looking at?

2010-2015 Chevy Volt

~35 miles electric only range before the small gas engine kicks in.

You'll only have to charge it once every couple of weeks with that commute and will stay all-electric.

From where I sit, you have 3 options.

1. '93 Ranger Splash (put the kids in the box - they'll love it)
2. Delta 88
3. Quit your job

So 1.5 miles a year. 3 HPFP replacements a year and a VANOS reseal covers it eh?

I love my G35 that serves the purpose of the weekend and occasional weekly driver.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

If you are willing to drive a manual transmission, I would suggest a 2006/2007 honda accord with the 6 speed and v6. I was in a similar spot 5 years ago, wanting something reasonably fun to drive, MT, and reliable under $10K and although I never thought I would buy a bland Accord, I did so after reading reviews and driving the V6 6 speed. Seemed indestructible and fairly fun to drive despite the FWD.

I forgot how rare they are, and Honda fanboys have snapped most up once they dropped in price and their mom's would buy it for them.

A buddy at work has that same (or within a model year or two) WRX, same color and everything.

I've looked a little bit at V6 Accords / Camrys / Maximas, and almost all I've seen are automatic. No clue about the Nissan CVT, I assume they suck?

I've got a '94 Acura Legend GS that I've owned for 20 yrs. Has hail damage and needs A/C and some other repairs but still my DD. Despite all that I still get compliments on the car. V6 will still scratch 2nd gear.

You need to provide us a better photo, but embedding your link below. Those era Legends are pretty timeless. I can't imagine owning a car 20 years but I respect it.

I really liked those cars.

Have you had to replace the ignition switch on it yet?

My commuter is an 08 TL with about 155k on it. I had to do a few minor things when I bought it but has been rock solid for 1.5 years. 07-08s have a more reliable trans than the 04-06.

My brother has one of those TLs as a road trip/airport car. Plus my old M37, a 90s mustang GT, Suburban, 00s Ram truck and an 05 CTSV.

Some people collect women to hang on their arm, some like lots and lots of cars.

No, but he's got a pretty big driveway.

He's buying a house now with a much bigger garage. Also has a couple dirtbikes and four wheelers in there.

Thanks for the suggestion. I found an 08 TL with ~95k miles in my budget and did the deal today!
