My wife was recently in an accident which totaled her car. She is looking for a commuter car to replace it. She found one she likes but the carfax on the dealer website has "damage reported" in April 2017. Is there any way to find out what kind of damage?

The salesman said there's no way to tell from the carfax. I don't trust anyone who is trying to sell me something so I want a 2nd opinion.
Take it to Carmax and have it appraised. They know what to look for and will probably tell you where they see signs of prior repair.

Sometimes Autocheck has more details on extent of damage.
