The official reason is "long term reliability issues".

My 5.7 was supercharged for 135K miles before I sold it. I had it for the last 52K miles and never had engine problems. It ran great and I even towed 10K pound trailers with it. The guys that had engine failures were mostly guys who did pulley swaps without custom tuning. That's a big no no on any supercharged engine. Some guys did have supercharger failures early though. That's only about $900 -$1,200 to rebuild out of warranty though.

I wouldn't hesitate to supercharge another though, the torque is too much fun.

Why do you need a supercharger if the 5.7 tows the space shuttle?

Make sure you have the trailer brake package, though. Everyone knows that it's not the going that's a problem, it's the stopping, and you'll need those space shuttle brakes when you're on a slope.

Space shuttle has parachutes for stopping.

I'd say it's worth the money if you can get a good quality unit off of ebay for cheap and install it yourself. The HP gain wasn't nearly as large on the Tacoma as it was on the Tundra. I think it puts the Tacoma at approximately 300 hp. I haven't really read up on the Tacoma systems or the reliability of supercharged Tacomas, but I've definitely seen high mileage units for sale. I do know that the tacoma used an older Eaton supercharger, maybe an M90 or M122. The Tundra used a newer TVS 1900.
