4Runner or Expedition

Wife and I are shopping for her replacement for a 2006 Explorer. We have a 2y/o and probably will add one more. We live on a farm and live the outdoor life. On the advice of this board we looked hard at 4Runner and found we liked them a lot.

Test drove an Expedition because it was on the lot and the wife really enjoyed it. Bigger than she wanted, but handled good.

My questions are:
Will an Expedition hold up as well if we purchased used (40-60k miles) and drive it to 150k+?

Is the 4wd option on them comparable to the 4Runner?

Looking to purchase after taxes are completed.

You're comparing apples and oranges.

With that said, I'd get the Expedition

Got home and measured the garage. Expedition will be a tight fit. We are still leaning 4Runner.

My wife is easily swayed by gadgets.

Should be comparing an Expedition and Sequoia really.

That said, I drive a TRD Off-Road 4Runner, and I really like it.

Buy a 4wd. They are so much more desirable down the road when you go to sell.

Used or new 4Runner?

Currently have a 2017 premium with 3rd row seating.
If you plan to keep 10 yrs/150k then I would stick with the 4Runner. 4wd is nice but 2 wd with some good all terrains works well unless you are just trying to get stuck or travel in snow/ice often.

How is the even a question, the answer is always a Toyota Landcruiser.

That's like 2 TRD Pro 4Runners.

The long term ownership costs of the 4Runner cannot be beat. I'd get the base SR5 with RWD; simpler drive train. You drive them to well over 250K miles + with no major issues. I wouldn't rely on a Ford beyond 150K.

I would at least test drive a Toyota Sequioa. They are very reliable and much more roomy than the 4Runner. Car seats are big! (I have two in car seats myself)

This would probably be more comparable to the expedition than the 4Runner.

The current design is quite long in the tooth though.

Sequoia is going to be minimum $14,000 more new on base vs base cost of 4Runner. Also the 5.7 will get a lot less mpg.

What are you seeing real life mpg in your Sequoia?

I'm seeing 16.9- 17 city, 22.8- 23.1 highway in the 4Runner using cruise control.

What does the new Expedition start at? No way it's $14,000 less.

I thought you meant versus the 4Runner cost.

A three year old Expedition vs 4Runner are similarly priced. Which is probably my sweet spot for used cars.

That's something else to take into consideration. I like 4runners because they hold resale value.
On the 3 year old 4Runner vs Expedition being similar price reflects this as the expedition was quite a bit more when new versus the 4Runner.

How much are they asking for the expedition?

Have y'all driven the 4Runner ?

Drove both today at CarMax. We both favor the 4Runner.

Waiting on taxes then shopping hard.
Mid $20ks would make us happy.

I wouldn't buy a used Expedition right now. You've gotta be able to get an incredible deal on a 17 by now, no?

Supposedly new '17's are tough to find. At least that's what my local dealer told me

Wife drives a limited 4Runner with two newborn babies that ride in the back. It is right with two rear facing car seats but not miserable. Cargo area does get a little tight when stroller, luggage, etc is all in the back. With all that said... the reliability puts it over the edge for us. We love it. Drives good and looks good. And I can stand the fact every new mom thinks they need a Tahoe and the fact we don't have one makes me proud.

Newborn babies you say? Have you looked at the crash test ratings on the 4Runner?

Still safer than farm equipment and livestock my 2y/o is around constantly.

And certainly better than the 06 Explorer we currently drive.

Give Buck Williams a shout, he's reproag on the boards. He's at Tegeler Toyota in Brenham.
I spoke with him early last week and he has pre-owned 4Runners, so you can at least get a good price point

Reached out to him and been very pleased. Gotta get taxes all settled first, but hoping we can work something out.

Wife had a 2007 expedition we put 157K miles on with minimal issues other than routine maintenance.

Replaced it with a new 2015 Expedition EL limited that now has around 66K with no issues.

I've talked her down from replacing it with a land rover, but I'll probably get a late model used 4Runner in late 2019 when I pass my F150 down to my son.

With young kids, I think you'll want the space of a full size, 3rd row SUV.

Yes and yes, but you're asking for a comparison to a modern Expedition. It sounds like you already have your mind made up though so I won't bother you with those pesky facts.

Ford probably does it for liability reasons

Lot of crash danger when you are stranded on the side of the road with spark plugs blown out of the head with 4runners flying by at 80 mph.

Correct. They already blew them out. 20- 25% under '18s moved them quick. Much of that percentage coming from the '18's cost increase.

EDIT- Looking at autotrader there are still a few hundred 2017s still out there.
