Parents have my SIL's old Escort parked at their place. They use it once in a while to keep the battery up, but it mostly sits. Late last night the horn randomly started honking, but at a weak/partial output.

My Dad tried starting the car, banging on the horn on the steering wheel, and finally just disconnected the battery because it was pushing midnight when it started. They got it inspected not long ago and it was the first time it had been honked in a while.

Ideas other than holy water?

Seriously, not even worth spending 30min trying to fix it.

Wouldn't/ shouldn't this be your brothers problem? Or is this your wife's sister, in which case this should be your in laws problem....

SIL gave it to my mom years ago. Mom doesn't use it much any more, so became a spare. My nephew is about to get his license and will inherit it as a starter.

Could be a stuck relay, bad clockspring or stuck contacts on the horn pad.

My brother had a mid-90's Riviera that had the horn start blowing at random times. Turns out the airbag module in the steering was poorly fitting and caused the horn contacts to start shorting out.

The Escort made the Tempo (a huge POS in its own right) seem like a quality vehicle. I remember when they came out with the Escort GT. It turned a car with no horsepower into one with a little bit more than no horsepower.
