Got a little white trash project coming up, need to rebuild the trans. Got a wild hair about maybe moving from the 4L to the 6L, get some more gearing, etc.

So while Googling this, I see that a lot of 4WD and Jeep bros are busy yanking out the 6L80 and putting in the 4L80.

What the heck, over? Is the 4L perceived to be that much better?

And if you want to mock my original idea, I'm looking at a 2000 Sierra 2500. Current 6.0 and 4L80. Saw some 6L80 trans on fleaBay for about what a 4L80 rebuild would cost. Hmmmm. Currently have 3.73 gears, if I went to 4.10 rear, the 6L80 would make up for that little when I'm not towing....

Also going to rebuild motor due to questionable history and lots of oil leaks. Wonder what a mild cam and a single turbo would do for my ability to pull a fifth wheel camper.....

With a tune, a turbo would get you a lot of torque on a longer band.

I think they go to a 4 from a 6 to reduce shifts and let the torque converter do the work, and give them a simpler transmission to manage with throttle inputs.

Document what you decide to do. I have an 04 2500 that I've thought about going to a 6 when the current ****** takes a dump.

It could be a fun project. It's painted white, so White Trash is already my name for it. Bought it for $1000. Previous owner had a short length of chain hanging from the hitch because "they used to drag black people behind pickups". He lived in a house with holes in the roof. There was an AC/DC disc left in the player, and a baseball bat in the folded up back seat. And a bullet hole in the bed..

In through the outer side of the bed, did not make it through the inner wall.

Is this a need or a want to rebuild the transmission? A 4L80e with a Transgo HD2 kit will take anything you throw at it.

I'd stick to the 4L80e and use the saved money elsewhere.

Trans is slipping, so have to do something

That had been a consideration. Been quoted about $2200 to rebuild the 6.0 engine and $3500 for the 4L80. Currently has 3.73 rear.

So thinking of other options:

Wrecking yard 6.0 and 4L80
Wrecking yard 8.1 and Allison
Swap for 4.10 rear
Rebuild 6.0, add 6L80
Rebuild 6.0, add 6L80, add turbo
Rebuild 6.0, cam, turbo

I have a half ton work truck. This would be the pull REALLY heavy trailers for the farm, plus a fifth wheel RV that weighs about 9K.

On a side note the huge RV is only for the next 2 years or so. We want to go to a smaller one, but this one is doubling as housing for USAF TDY.

For white trash projects the 700r4 is the only option.

I figured it was a TH400. For poor white trash I thought was a TH350.

Never cared for them. 2 speed powerglide or the big 700.
