Over the last couple of months, are Volvo has started popping on a light saying that it is low on oil period we refill it, and it goes out, and then it popped back on again recently. This is happens twice now. Any thoughts? Car is nearly three years old and never happened up until the last couple of months. We don't see any oil sitting underneath that ever.

Probably burning the oil. Do you have any smoke from the tailpipe?

It is my wife's car, but she says she does not recall seeing any smoke coming out of her tailpipe

i would get under it and look around and see. it would be pretty unusual for a three year old car to burn oil.

also stand behind the car on a cold start and see if you see any smoke.

Mom's BMW has been burning oil since controlled off the factory floor. Uses 1 quart about every 1000 miles.

Is it a 3.2?

If so, google Volvo 3.2 oil consumption and then get ready. It won't be pretty.......

BTW, that's probably the most complicated engine ever built. So that's fun.....

For what it's worth, Ford won't even look at your engine for warranty until it burns more than 1 qt per 1000 miles....

Less than that is considered ok. Lol.

2.0 L

Happened again, wife took to our local automotive shop. Low oil message came on again. She was told that there is an issue with the pistons on some Volvo vehicles, that she needs to contact the Volvo dealership.

Not made in China.
The car has been to the dealership where they have done an oil change and reboot of the system.
Supposed to take vehicle back after 680-1000 miles put on. Will take back to dealership this week as the mileage necessary (680+) has occurred. The sensor has come back stating oil a qt. low again.

No answers yet.

Update on Volvo oil issue : Volvo ran tests and sent the data to the Volvo engineers. After they replaced the pistons the engineers said the motor needed to be replaced. So the car has a new motor and is running fine. All of the cost was covered by Volvo and they provided my wife a rental car for the entire time her vehicle was in repair. It was a long process but Volvo and Volvo of The Woodlands were helpful. Good experience overall addressing and correcting the issues with the vehicle.
