Someone jumped the curb and wrapped their car around a tree in my front yard last night. They ditched the car and I found it this morning. There was beer in the passenger seat and an open container of pot on the center console.

Good news is the tree doesn't look too bad. The car is easily totaled.

Police came and got the car but wouldn't or couldn't tell me who it was. They said to give them a call if the person comes looking for their car. They are tracking them down but they may come back for their stuff before they get to them. I'd like to know who I'm dealing with. Anyone that can ok with running a plate for me?

The tree is bigger than it appears but from what I can see it didn't budge. I thought for sure it would've been messed up but it looks fine. There is just a little bark missing.

It's one of the only trees we don't have winter fencing on. I don't know that it would've changed anything if it would have though.

Yeah. Deer and Elk. They come right up to the house so we need the fencing. A good sized elk herd walks through my backyard most nights in the winter. Its pretty cool expect that they **** everywhere.

Just to be on the safe side you could apply some pruning paint to the tree's wounds. Temps look cool enough you may be alright just leaving it.

Get the brush on paint and apply to the wounds directly. The spray on would look like overkill.

and if you are going to do it, do it TODAY not next week.

Keep checking with the police. They will likely have a report and the owner should be listed with an unknown driver. Contact their insurance and you can file a claim. They will likely deny if the car was stolen. If their insured left the scene they will likely handle and cover and damages to the landscaping. They may try to wait and see if the tree dies, but get a few quotes for the tree, grass and ruts so you have a baseline on what to ask for in damages.

I paid for a few trees and several lawn repairs when I was an adjuster.
