Out of warranty, need to change spark plugs and am entertaining a programmer...

(1) I know I need to get the properly gapped plugs for peak performance
- is that something a standard shop can do? Do I need to order specialty plugs?

(2) Is it worth it?

(3) Any known or potential reliability issues with programmers on the boost?

(4) good brands?

I tow a trailer with 4 wheeler a lot during hunting season and then mainly drive highway miles the rest of the time. No morning commute. Rarely drive in traffic.

Just toying with the idea of adding some power or improving efficiency. It tows and hauls ass, just fine stock... but the inner kid in me wants to add more.

Not options: LS Swap, biggger turbos, etc.

Thanks

Livernois and 5 Star are two of the bigger boost tuners out there.

If you're happy with the performance, why stress it? Has anyone done a long term review of how a programmer impacts turbo life, etc?

This is all you need to know, get their package that comes with intake, tuner, plugs, and t stat. If the plugs aren't pre gapped, buy a set of feeler gauges from the auto parts store and gap them yourself. You can Google how to gap them and the proper gap for your motor.

I ran a Livernois tuner on my '13 and was very pleased with the results.

I think for that kind of heavy towing you might just need Powerstroke.....

I'm currently running the livernois 93 on my 2011. It hauls ass. They also have a tow tune you can run when you want to tow. I've been very pleased with it, had it for 3 years and not a single issue.

Because I have had my truck for 2 years and have been fighting the urge to not mod my truck for that long.

I really don't want to jeopardize the mechanical integrity of the engine but everything I have read indicates that's not really a problem with most boost tuners.

Thanks! Do you think one is better than the other?

I bought K Bo's tuner and have been running the 93 performance tune for the past 20k miles. No issues, but I'm at 50k miles and going to replace the spark plugs with Motorcraft SP534. I've read that 0.28-.030 gap is good.

I'm happy with the Livernois tune, and doubt there is much difference than the 5 star.

A buddy here at work has tunes from MPT and Unleashed on his 2012 boost. He said he mainly runs the Unleashed tunes right now because the MPT ones were "a little too much" (but it's fun to switch over occasionally).
