I'm in the market for a F250 with the 6.7 Powerstroke, 4wd. I'm looking at the 2011s and 2012s with about 100,000 miles on them. This truck would probably see lots of highway miles over the next 3-5 years pulling a travel trailer and trips to the deer lease in the fall. Question is what to expect maintenance and repair wise between 100,000 and 200,000? Also, any suggestions on what to stay away from. I'm looking at non lifted trucks, as stock as possible. TIA!

Dont buy a Job #1 6.7L. They had teething issues, including with the core support and radiators.

I also dont care for the snakeskin leather pattern in the seat centers.

2012 is better.

Yeah, I wondered if they suffered the typical first year bugs with the 2011s. Thanks!

Don't own one out of warranty. Know how much a motor costs? A trans? I do

Mine was an 11. It ran great until it didn't. Will never own a newer diesel out of warranty again

Unfortunately it wasn't just the first year.

JB, did you ever recover your truck?

Is there something specific about the 6.7 that makes you want it?

You'd have to look harder, but a 6.0 with same miles would be cheaper and you could use some of the left over money to bulletproof. Way easier on the wallet in the long run.

Truck was found in Pearsall after a police chase a few weeks back. Insurance totaled it. Best thing that could have happened.

And you could have the front end swapped out if that's what you're going for.

I have a 2008 F-350 4WD, with 112,500 miles that I'm trying to sell. It has the 6.4 power stroke engine, replacement bumpers, headache rack, running boards, spray in bed liner, & 5th wheel ready. Lariat package, with leather, navigation, sun roof, & sliding back glass. The truck is black on black, and also has a Banks exhaust system. Has a few dings (two actually) but is a very clean, good looking, one owner truck. Will take $20,000 for it. This is my boss' truck so that it is "bottom dollar". Truck is located in Waco. Message me here if interested and I'll send some pics your way as time allows.

Ford Diesels .

Just kidding. Buy what you want. Just thinking about what I see on this board, 6.7's have had fuel system issues, turbo issues, along with others issues some of which have been mentioned above.

If you do your own maintenance, you can do oil changes/fuel filter changes for around the same price as if you were to pay someone to do it for you on a gasser. My Duramax runs me around $45 at 5K mile oil changes and just under $100 at 10K miles oil changes (includes fuel and trans filters). Everythign else is just luck of the draw on maintenance, some people have to change a glow plug here and there, some go 100k before needing a little nick-nack item like that.

Ford revised the turbo and few other things for the 2015 MY. 2015s and up might be out of budget. But the revised engine is said to be holding up better.

I had an 11 F250 that I previously used for pulling trailers for work. In 2015, I had to replace the motor and turbo. it was also deleted at this time.

Begining of 2016, the trans started to go out. I no longer needed it for work, so it became a third vehicle used for hauling my slide-in camper and pulling my crawler. The truck down shifted so hard, that it had become difficult to daily drive around town, so I went back to my trusty gas F-150. Wife randomly drove it on her day off down to Town Lake in Austin, where she parked it in a very busy parking lot under Mopac. She locked the keys in the truck while she went running. She uses the keypad code to get back in. She came back to no truck.

Two week later they found it after a police chase down in Pearsall. Guys got away. No backseat, no radio, exhaust falling off, fuel tank skid falling off, front bumper and grill damaged, flat tire, and most all the body panels scratched up. Cops told me it had more then likely been used to smuggle illegals.

Insurance totaled it and Copart has it now. I keep checking bad to see if it pops up and what it goes for.

Sorry for the thread hi-jack. I would just be very careful about buying a modern diesel without the safety net of a warranty. I for sure would not buy and 11, maybe not even a 12. The final bill for the new motor/turbo was absurd and it still hurts to think about. Truck was maintained perfectly and was driving perfectly at 70mph down the highway when the motor went. Glow plug came apart if I remember correctly and trashed the cylinder.

Currently looking for another truck to haul camper and Jeep, but prices for used diesels are pretty stupid. There are actually OBS Fords on ebay and the asking price is 22-25k.

This is interesting to say the least. I owned a 2009 6.4 that I deleted and drive for about 12k miles that way. I got tired of wonder when (not if) it was going to give out. Bit the bullet and bought a brand new one with extended warranty.

I had an '08 that I bought in '12 with 52K on it. Deleted it at 100,001 miles. Sold it in October with 138k on it. Other than maintenance items, it had a front wheel seal just before I bought it, and then blend door actuators, belt, tensioner, and seat heater element all done at 99K. Not a single other issue in 86K miles over 4.5 years. It was a job 3 truck.

Thanks for the responses. I just asked this on the OB thread - are there any reputable warranties to get for over 100,000 miles? I'm not all that interested in doing the EGR delete if it risks passing inspection and maybe reduces reliability. Also, I'm a little worried that my expectation of a diesel being more reliable after the 100,000 mile mark might not be the case. I thought that was one of the great things about these trucks was that they could be expected to go well into 300,000+ miles.

You can find a warranty but it won't be cheap.

You live in Texas, I'm assuming, so I doubt you would get hassled for EGR delete.

The VAST majorities of reviews you'll find online are negative. For every 5 negative reviews you read, there's 500-1000 guys out there with trucks who haven't given them many, if any, fits. Those guys don't need to start threads on forums.

A lot of guys whine and complain on forums and then it comes out that they were 2k over for all oil change, pulling 20k# in the Arizona desert.

Diesels can last that long, but don't buy one over 100k unless you get a really good description of it's life prior to being in your hands.

Yeah, I'm in Travis county. Consumer reports shows the only serious reliability issues are with the fuel system which is probably where the frequent fuel filter changes come in? Thanks again for the feedback!

Just because it is a warranty don't think you cant haggle the price. I have a couple nagging items on my truck which just turned 5years old (2012 F350) I was able to get another warranty extension to 125kmiles (added another 3yrs 36k miles to the truck as it stands now) for 2100 bucks, and that's complete coverage engine, drive-train, accessories and all. I have an issue with my drive shaft sticking a little in the expansion joint i need fixed as well as one of the down pipes on the turbo. I think they cracked the corrugated part of the tube when they pulled my turbo to fix a coolant leak.

Fuel system problems were common in 11-12's due to the Bosch HPFP being extremely sensitive to bad diesel (water in fuel). Because Ford was not at fault for the fuel you put in your truck, they would not cover them under warranty ($9,000-10,000 repair bill). However, your insurance company most likely will cover that bill after you pay your deductible.

I think Ford fixed the problem with the 2015 update to the Scorpion.

You will have serious problems if you stick to that number. Do a fuel filter change every other oil change (10,000 miles).

If you're doing an oil change every 5,000 miles, any reason to run synthetic? I have been doing my own oil changes since I started driving and have used Mobil 1 in almost every vehicle which lets me change at 10,000-15,000 depending on driving conditions. I can see why more frequent oil changes might be recommended for a diesel. No more often than this truck would need it, I'd probably spend the extra $20 on the Mobil 1 over standard dino juice but just curious...

Also, it looks like the 2013 has a more integrated nav/entertainment system. I'm kinda liking the 2012 design a little better because it looks like it would be easier to upgrade. Any experience updating the technology in a 2013?
I have that issue on my old 2005 land cruiser now. It would make such a difference if I could find a way to get the latest technology in there but it has the "all in one" nav/entertainment/air cond/etc.

You're buying a truck with an engine that costs $10,000-$15,000 to replace. Give me one good reason why you should run anything but the best (synthetic). Ask anyone with a high mileage 6.7 truck and I promise you they don't go over 5k for a change. For type of oil, that's your choice. Just make sure it meets CJ-4. I run 5w40 Rotella T6 because I've found that my Fords really seem to like it.Oh yeah, and only run a Motorcraft filter.

This sounds like you want an aftermarket head unit. Otherwise, what 'new technologies' do you seek? There are some companies that make aftermarket bezels for 13-16 models so that you can add an iPad underneath the screen.

Yeah, I'd like to be able to update the nav, Bluetooth, etc. I checked Crutchfield but didn't come up with any replacement head units for a 2013 f250 that has the factory nav system - which the lariats all seem to have. You can get them for the 2012 though.

Oil intervals on the 6.7 are 7500 miles for regular use. I always ran Motorcraft oil.

Get XLT, Add leather/heated seats and whatever head unit you desire.

Mine even plays nice with SYNC

Drove a 2012 and a 2013 today. Big difference with the '13. That pretty much made my decision. Thanks again for all the advice. Hopefully bring one home in the next few weeks.
