Tossing around the idea of getting a commuter car. I drive about 40-50 miles per day.

Some of the options i'm looking at:

Fisker karma (couldn't tell you why, but i love this car)
The new Audi a4 electric car
Ford Taurus
Chevy Malibu

My first choice is the Karma (i've only done some light research so any opinions are very much welcome)

Also, those of you guys with electric cars, what sort of infrastructure do I need to add to my house, if any..?

other ideas are welcome as well. Again, just tossing around the idea.

TIA

What would be the reason for getting a commuter? Better MPG, less wear on other vehicle, etc?

If your goal is to save money it is hard to make the math work unless you just want a fun car for a commute.

You'll save nothing.

40-50 miles round trip sounds like an awesome commute too.

So you are not really in it for savings?

Karma's go for $45-50k

That'll buy a **** load of gas.

That's part of why I was asking (and what has been alluded to already). You won't pay off another vehicle with the gas savings, or if you do it will be way down the road.

Now, if it's just for fun or because this is America... then by all means carry on.

the only way to save money is to buy a beater car.

You need to be looking at Toyota Corrolas or Honda Civics with >100k miles.

Find one for less than $8k and enjoy riding that beitch to work. Cheap and easy to maintain and you can easily put another 100k on there.

There is the justification you're trying to find from us. If you really enjoy driving, then buy what you want and enjoy it. Maybe that is a Corolla with a 5 spd (like a friend of mine, while his truck and corvette sat at home) or maybe something more enjoyable but less MPG like my 6 spd BMW.

FWIW, my DD and road trip vehicle was a Z71 truck for 13+ years until I bought the BMW (well used). The truck is now used for truck stuff or bad weather commuting (snow). I also had a motorcycle for many years in there too for commuting and fun trips. I like having a fun car and truck, and (obviously) keep them a long time. I surely come out ahead owning both at the same time and not buying something else every few years. YMMV.

I bought a car to keep miles off the pickup. Those things are the price of a house these days.

This is a mindset that I simply don't understand.

I think its more for prolonging the life of the current truck to avoid the $40K+ premium for a new one. When mine gets closer to 200K on the odometer I may retire it to weekend/truck stuff duty and go the used civic route just to get me to and from work.

Heck, even now I'm driving the 2006 I bought from you simply because it has fewer miles than my 2010. That'll change when the kid takes his driving test though.

Yep. I didn't pay a ton of money for the pickup. In fact, the 2008 pickup when it was new was 1/2 the price of the car. An equivalent now is 2x and doesn't have most of the options I want. At 130K miles were piling on too fast driving to work & back empty. I have a 30-mile commute.

Won't understand this either. I think it's a mind game, trucks these days will go 200k easy, replacement parts aren't costly either, just drive it.

pickup prices have doubled since 2008? Thats crazy - and they still are top sellers

Quadrupled

What drove off the lot in 2008 for $15K is offered for just under $60K now.

At 25K mi/yr you're saying the pickup had 2 more years as a daily driver. Repairs aren't too expensive if they happen in a timely manner.

Tows aren't cheap, and neither are rentals or overnight delivery. Walking 60 mi/day for work is right out of the question.

Only makes sense if you get a beater with minimal depreciation left and you have the cash to pay for it. 100k mike Civic or Corolla or maybe a Prius if there is some stop and go traffic on your route.

yeah I don't think there's any way that's accurate. trucks are no doubt way expensive right now, but no way the exact model you bought for 15 in 2008 is 60 now.

You're partially correct.

It isn't even available now. Too few options.

Just repriced it with the bare minimum to replace with a similar pickup.
It almost $40K so only 2.6x

I forgot the $60K was the 4x4 which added functionality I miss occasionally.

I will agree that prices have gone up as well, but for comparison:

2008 Silverado 2500HD 4x4 LTZ Diesel: $52,000 MSRP

2016 Silverado 2500HD 4x4 LTZ Diesel: $65,000 MSRP

What truck (make/model/cab config/engine/drivetrain) did you get for $15K in 2008? Was it a fullsize? That seems remarkably low.

2008 F250 XL 2dr. - 6 spd. MSRP: $25000 OTD: $15,000
2017 F250 XL - 6 spd. MSRP: DNE
2017 F250 XL 2dr. - auto. MSRP: $38,000 OTD: ??? Doubt one is sitting on a lot.
