Water in differential

from what I've read, this only happens in flooded vehicles or those driven through really deep water.

Have my Jeep commander at the transmission shop for what turns out to be nearly a total rebuild of the rear end, and he mentioned that among the mangled gears, there was water inside the diff. I'm the original owner and it has never come close to being flooded or driven through anything more than a few inches of water.

What symptoms where given for the blown diff?

I have had mine up past the diff and water intrusion hasn't been an issue.

How can they tell? Did you ask for a sample of oil to send in for analysis?

I took it in because the whine in the rear end had gotten a lot worse the last couple of weeks, then on Saturday, I heard a pop followed by a buzzing noise from about 15mph till I hit 30+.

I couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was at first. Initial reaction was a blown tire or one of the tie downs from the Xmas tree I was hauling had started buzzing in the wind or came loose, but neither was the case. Then it dawned on me what the more likely answer was. They took it apart today and one of the bolts had backed out and chewed things up. IIRC, it was the pinion gear/bearing and carrier bearings. Almost to the point of buying an entire rear end assembly would be cheaper. Almost. That they found water was just twisting the knife. Pisses me off because I was just about to get rid of it...

Get one from a salvage yard.

I just checked LKQ and you can get one in my area code (76132) from $400 to under $1k, depending on your build.

I debated going that route but this issue seems to be fairly common with the commanders and I don't want to be in the same boat in a few months.

How many miles are on it?

I'm swapping out the front differential on my wife's Commander now. 185,000 miles and the bearings are gone. I found a low mileage one at LKQ which was much cheaper than rebuilding mine. Plus she's only out of the car for one day.

Ditto, throw a salvage rear end in that truck and drop it like its hot at the dealership for a new funmobile

I was about to pull the trigger about two weeks ago, then this all started. After reading about similar issues on various jeep forums (nearly every time theirs were repaired for less than half of what mine will end up being), I had decided to fix it and drive it for about 6 more months, maybe a year, then get something new next year.

It only has 88k miles and I actually enjoy driving it, so while it's a bitter pill to swallow, I feel good knowing it's done right and will be good for a long time. At least the rear differential will be...

Trade in value isn't much but I figured with relatively low miles it would be worth exploring the private sale route. I've been approached over the last few years by multiple customers at work who know its mine, asking if I was interested in selling it. Should still be well under 100k even a year from now since I have a commute of less than 10 miles.
