(CNN)Hospitals in at least two Texas counties are at full capacity heading into the Fourth of July holiday weekend, with county judges urging residents to shelter in place.

Judges in Starr and Hidalgo counties sent out emergency alerts Friday, warning residents that local hospitals in the Rio Grande Valley were at capacity.

Judge Eloy Vera said there have been 18 deaths in Starr County due to Covid-19 and two severely ill patients had to be flown out of the area for treatment. One of the patients was taken to San Antonio and the other to Dallas, the judge said in the post on Facebook.

Thanks for sharing that. That's the closest hospital to my family. Might have to ship them up here.

Hidalgo County topped out at over 1,000 hospitalizations in July with the entire RGV at over 1,500.

This week we are trending up in daily covid cases, up from 100-200 a day to 426 yesterday and 681 today. If trends hold our hospitalizations will start going up in a couple of weeks and then deaths a week or two after that.

It looks like our 2nd wave might be just beginning. Hopefully not and it's just a blip.

I hoped that it would hit us a couple of months down the road when the vaccine had a chance to be distributed to at least front line workers but it looks like that might not be the case.

Don't get sick enough to go to the hospital

On July 12th Hidalgo County had 52 people hospitalized with covid.

Today it's 675. 228 in the ICU.

Lots of sad irony still present in our area. The flea markets continue to be WFO, yet the pathetic school districts want to force masks. La Joya ISD is part of law suit fighting Abbot on the no mandate for masks deal, went to a volleyball tourney at their school and the mask use was pathetic, their own school cop with it off, their on site administrator with it around the neck, tons of people walking around without one. It is all theater in the RGV, with a large dose of "hay que cuidar los pobrecitos ninos" BS.

Not one word in the media about feeding kids better, getting exercise, or improving health. Yet they want to mandate vaccinations and wear masks that aren't going to do much of anything. Canceling events, etc.

This area has an overall ignorance, apathy, and at the professional/medical level, a fear mongering problem. I can almost certainly guarantee that the county Health Authorities would save more lives banning the sale of white flour and lard in the RGV than putting a mask on every possible soul ever would.

There was no panic, nothing in the news, no calling for extreme measures in 2006 nor 2007 when my mother was dying and twice could not get into hospitals, once into ICU, due to the hospitals being full.

Unfortunately, this is a two prong attack on the weaknesses of the Valley.

One, open border policies.

Two, rampant obesity.
