Looking for a reputable funeral home. If you can recommend a funeral home, I would appreciate it. I think we may prefer a locally-owned, reputable business over a chain.

I hate any Dignity/SCI operation. I have heard very good things about Bradshaw-Carter on West Alabama -- family owned and local.

I used Crowder in Pearland for my dad. Family owned and they were great to me.

Anyone have experience with Waltrip on Campbell?

We went to one that I believe is associated with Dignity and walked out.

Robert Waltrip founded Service Corporation International. Dignity is their "retail" brand. They all suck.

My mom used Beresford in Alief for my grandmother's funeral and they were good at a low cost. They're in Alief but drove to Oglesby for the service.

Good info to have. Thanks. Scratched that off the list, I think.

My mother prepaid her funeral expenses decades ago at what was then a family-owned cemetery several states away -- intent was to be buried with her parents. Dignity bought them at some point.

When she passed away a few years ago, I took the original paperwork and called the cemetery to schedule services. They did everything in their power to avoid providing services that Mom had paid for, then upcharging me for other stuff -- obviously assuming that I'd only be in town for the services and could safely be ignored.

I flew in a week before the services and showed up in their office unannounced to make sure they were going to live up to the contract. They were not receptive. I came back later in the day, coincidentally when they were holding a funeral, and remonstrated with the funeral director quite vocally in the lobby. (I pitched a fit.) When I left, I told her that she could expect me to attend every one of the nine funerals she had scheduled from then until my Mom's service.

She called me an hour later and apologized for the "paperwork errors", assured me that everything would be done per the contract and suggested that I could get the same guest book she wanted me to buy for $399 off of Amazon for $40.

The service went off without a hitch.

The guy at the Dignity affiliated place (George Lewis & Sons) was so slimy I felt like I was in a dirty car dealership. He wouldn't listen when I outlined exactly what we needed and kept trying to sell me packages full of crap we didn't need. Then he wanted to charge me 10% up front and insisted I give him a checking account so they could draw monthly payments from it. I was just trying to get the arrangements made in advance so my Dad doesn't have to make a bunch of decisions when he is grieving the loss of my Mom, and this POS thought that made me an easy target. A short time into our meeting I told him I had made a mistake trying to deal with people like him and walked out. He needs to burn in hell.

So awesome. I checked out his website and watched one of his videos. I'll definitely give him a call when I have a need. How did you learn about him?

Is it awful that they treated me so poorly, or awful that I made a nuisance of myself at a funeral? You and Buck are so self-righteous it's hard to tell the difference.

Well, I actually meant the way they treated you.

Self-righteous? Mkay. But thanks for your recommendations as our family prepares to deal with the death of a loved one.

I was tracking with his story, but now I'm thinking half the problem was a personality issue.

yes.....avoid any Dignity/SCI owned place. They are known throughout the industry as the Dollar General of funeral homes.

If you can find someone close that is a member of this organization, use them.

This is an association of independent funeral homes.

We used Miller Funeral Services (Miller Funeral & Cremation Society of Texas | Houston, TX) on Beechnut and they were very easy to work with. Family owned and operated and never pushy about anything.

I like all the ambiguous names that funeral and cremation companies use. My dad recently received an invitation in the mail to attend a luncheon for prospective members of the prestigious "Neptune Society." Upon further reading, it don't look like my kind of party.

The Neptune Society is a low rent cremation deal for people that just want to be cremated and have their ashes sent to their families in a box.

Low-rent cremation, huh? Like there might be some chunks of you in the box?

Lots of places charge a bit for cremation but my mom found a place on 1942 near Crosby that was much cheaper, like $750, for basic cremation. I had to scoop some ashes into a baggie and there were no chunks.

I haven't used them but have met David and talked to him a few times. Seems like they would treat you right since family operation. Live in the area so he has to keep a good reputation.

The place on Westheimer and dairy Ashford, I think is dignity affiliated, was not the easiest to deal with. Bit of high pressure sale to sign a contract, plus once they had our deposit and signature they took their sweet time on delivering the stone, didn't return phone calls, etc.
