Does Biden's "infrastructure bill" pay to correct Houston's flooding problems? How much is slated to address this issue?

No. Texas went red in 2020 and will get nothing. The bill is nothing but pork

Hidalgo will get some to line the pockets of her comrades, and Turner's airport boy toy will get his internship extended.

There's probably money to build and tear down a temporary hospital 10 times per year.

And Turner is a complete failure if he doesn't get money to turn the Astrodome into that indoor garden thingy. Out of $2.2T surely he can work with the congresswoman to get $20B for that boondoggle.

Probably going to make a run at funding:

Light rail from Hobby to DT
High speed rail to Brazos Valley / DFW
BRT from 610/Post Oak to Downtown
Ike Dike

Light rail from Hobby to Downtown
Why downtown? Is that where most people landing at Hobby want to go?

Its the hub where all the rail and many metro bus lines stem from. Even if downtown isnt your final destination, you can somewhat feasibly get to other places in the area without having to rent a car or take uber.

Remember, Democrats have control. Goal of the money is to make sure people have to rely on government to provide their transportation for them. As others have said, light rail, passenger rail, and buses will be the top priority. Bike lanes and sidewalks will also be huge regardless of whether anyone uses them. Traffic lanes will be removed because we can't tear down shacks to build the new tracks since Democrat voters live in them. Only people with White privilege can afford cars, so we can't spend money on roads. And flood control benefits evil homeowners too much instead of benevolent renters for it to be a priority.

I wasn't suggesting this project...it seems that this has been floated by others and has gotten coverage in the Houston Chronicle.

Sounds like a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. Unless the problem is homeless not having A/C.

Its a problem when big events like OTC happen. I have clients, vendors, and co-workers flying in and they are shocked that there is no transit option to get them to where they are going without having to rent a car and then pay for parking or deal with finding an uber or taxi. If there is anywhere in town that having a rail line would make sense, I would think it would be to an airport

There is nowhere in town that having a rail line would make sense. Starting off with "where should we put a rail?" is stupid. Nowhere. We are too spread out. Explain to your clients that "where they are going" is miles from where everyone else is going and probably where their hotel is.

Assuming your Hobby to downtown rail is built, how long would it take for your clients to get from Hobby to NRG where OTC is being held?

This is a tired conversation and a chicken vs. egg one at that.

People don't use public transit where it doesn't exist. If it exists where people actually are located and want to go, it's used. If it's built out of convenience for sake of broad ROW availability or lower income transit equity rather than as a demand alternative, it has less utility.

The original rail routes that ran throughout the entire city circa 1900 were what created neighborhoods like the Heights, the East End and Downtown/Midtown. Their grids make it feasible.

Running a route to the burbs or to the airport presumes a high enough density or lack of alternatives, neither of which exists in the case of most southwest cities.

For the Downtown to Hobby light rail line, it's desired because that's what other big cities have, and what occasionally makes the difference for annual conference relo's and big events like Superbowl, the World Cup or other moonshot things, irrespective of utility to people in the burbs.

Its such a big problem that OTC can't get anyone to attend.

Is it really that big a hassle to "find an uber or taxi" at the airport? There are signs directing you where to go. Are these olds afraid of techonology?

Quote:

Portland, utopia to many here because they had a latte and rode the light rail on a weekend trip, is almost $4bln in on construction costs ( not operating costs). Area of Houston is about 3X area of Portland. Houston metropolitan population is 2.5X Portland. So is tens of billions really outside of the realm of probability?
Those number are a decade old by the way.

There is a thread right now talking about more and more people working from home. They are testing driverless flying cars in Dubai. Yet some still think plunking down billions on a train most won't ride makes good sense?

I know, right. I flew into ORD and had to rent a car to Oak Brook because there were no public transit options. How dare they!
