I am in B/CS but have heard that it is cheaper to get Lasik in the Houston area since there is more competition. Looking for doctor recs/ones to avoid as well as approximate cost. I will be paying cash. TIA

I used Dr Bruce January ~18 years ago. Easiest/best thing I've been done. He's still in business as far as I know.

Don't shop based on price for your eyes. Lot of cheaper places out there that don't have the latest equiptment and/or Dr's aren't as good.

Most of the top places all charge around the same amount.

I did mine at Mann Eye.

Another for Mann Eye. No complications. And have wondered why I didn't do it sooner

I should clarify that I am not shopping for the lowest price. The person I talked to went to Mann, I believe, and it was about $1000 cheaper than the quote I got here. I just wanted some feedback from others. Fwiw, I "shop" for many medical things, even when I am using my insurance. Hospitals and clinics can vary greatly on my out of pocket so I call around often. If I can get good quality care from another facility and/or doctor for a lower cost, I will consider going there.

Most reputable places charge around $2k per eye.

Had mine done at The Eye Clinic of Texas 20 something years ago. Best money I have ever spent and would do it again without thinking if I had to.

I shopped for mine and went to Lasik Vision Institute. Around $2,500 total 3 years ago. No regrets.

Of course I researched the facility, surgeon, etc. They use the same or better technology as every other place. The surgeon had 10s of thousands of procedures under his belt so I felt good about him.

Sometimes more expensive means better. Sometimes it doesn't.

Same, by Dr Ed Wade. Paid 2800 way back then.
I will say my left eye is getting worse (still 20/20) so im curious if they do "touch ups" should it get any worse.

I work with most of the eye surgeons in Houston and my company makes a lot of the lasers they use. Dr Brian Wright with Mann Eye is an Aggie and a great surgeon.

I used daddy Mann and recommend. They offer annually a reduced price around their anniversary so consider that for savings.

If you know how much their reduction normally is I'm guessing you can get it year around by bringing it up - same as a referral type discount I imagine.

My sight is very important to me. I chose to go to who I thought was the smartest and best in the business. I chose Dr. Koch at Baylor.

  • MD from Harvard Medical School
  • Professor and Allen, Mosbacher, and Law Chair in Ophthalmology
  • Past President: American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery
  • Past President: International Intraocular Implant Club
  • Past President: American Ophthalmological Society
  • 90+ publications

I ended up getting PRK about 10 years ago now. I have had no issues and do not see any light halos.

Smartest =/= best refractive surgeon. Besides, we're talking lasik here, it's not exactly rocket surgery. In this instance, Mann or Berkeley will both do very well and essentially are equivalent.

But has he been in the "Whos who among lasik professionals yearbook"?

Does that qualify as snack talk in your hood?? All I'm saying is trying to find the "best" lasik surgeon in town is like trying to find the best peanut butter and jelly sandwich. You can cut off the crust and make it into little triangles but it's essentially all the same sh*t. But what do I know, I'm just an eye doctor.

We found him about 20 years ago because he was who doctor's recommended when things were botched by others. He helped with my grandfather's detached retina, my mom's lasik, my grandmother's cataracts, my dad's intacts, my brother's PRK, and my PRK. I'm sure it's pretty straight forward these days, but back when most of us went, there were a good bit of botched jobs. My wife went to Mann before I met her and had to go back two more times to get things more correct (not what I'd call botched).

Thanks for the responses. I will contact some of the places/docs mentioned. I agree that there are many who are qualified so if I can save some $$ going to someone who is just as qualified and reputable, I will do that.

I had followed a few of these eye threads for a while when I'd see them... today I went and had a Lasik Consultation at Mann Eye In the Woodlands. I have the choice of Mann Jr or Dr Melton. I was highly impressed with everything that they did and said. The price they gave me was $4k. I'm guessing that seems about standard? It was either Mann eye or Berkeley, I went to Mann eye because a friend referred me there. Seems based off these threads they are the top 2 places in Houston

I had terrible vision (contacts were -7.5 both eyes), and my eye doctor's main recommendation was Whitsett Vision Group. She made it sound like the worse your vision, the more it matters who does it.

Anyway, I'm very happy with the outcome.
