For those of you that love trains, a piece of history is coming to town in November! Union Pacific has restored one of largest steam locomotives in the world. Not just a cosmetic restoration, but back to operating condition. This thing is enormous.

Great chance to take the little ones and show them a piece of history!

Thursday November 7th - 9 AM to 3 PM
902 Washington Avenue

Schedule

Quote:

Twenty-five Big Boys were built exclusively for Union Pacific Railroad, the first of which was delivered in 1941. The locomotives were 132 feet long and weighed 1.2 million pounds.

Thanks for posting. Looks like we up here in Denver get one of the last stops prior to it returning to Cheyenne.

Union Pacific has a GPS Tracking map on their website if you are wanting to keep up with where the train is at. If you're wanting to see it on the move, that might help you with timing.

Bump.

She'll be arriving tomorrow night around 7 PM at the Amtrak Station off Washington. Then be on display 9 AM to 3 PM on Thursday.

Photo nerds might be interested to post up on the interstate embankment and catch her steaming into the morning sun across the "Be Someone" bridge.

Has anyone kept track with how close they have been to their schedule? If they leave Eagle Lake at 2:30pm, that equates to 4.5 hours to travel ~75 miles to make it to the Amtrak station by 7pm. I can't go see it tomorrow or when it leaves Friday morning, so I was hoping that it would actually be coming down Washington around 4-5pm before it got dark. Using the entire 4.5 hours means it'll only be traveling around 15mph. I just assumed it would be going faster than that.

They're about 30 minutes behind schedule as of right now. It was supposed to arrive in Luling at 10am and it didn't arrive until 10:30. This is inline with the fact they departed Sunset Station in San Antonio 30 minutes late.

I'm going to try and catch it when it crosses willowbend over by my hood, hopefully 5:30 or so is early enough and it might actually still be light out!

Looks like beyond the 30 min. delay to start the day, it's staying on schedule. We'll see how long it takes to go from Flatonia to Eagle Lake.

Thought I was going to catch it in action, but apparently there was some lag in the tracker, so I missed it. When the location updated, it was already up by you.

Was along side of it on Hwy 90A between FM 359 & Hwy 99, have a great video but I can't ever post **** on this site. Pretty awesome looking, it was running about 30 mph the whole time but I lost the red light battle at 99 and never caught up to it again. This was pure ass luck as I had completely forgotten about it after reading this exact thread this morning and seeing it was coming through today.

I wonder how much steam they use with the whistle. Seems like all the videos I watch have them blowing it non-stop.
