If you're a nurse, do your friends take pictures of some weird wart they have and send them to you asking for a diagnosis? Or your buddies hitting you up for stock tips since you work at a brokerage firm. Do you have a personal policy on this?

That metal detector business already taking off?

Serious answer: having lots of doctors in my family is awesome and saved me a ton of money over the years. But I'm a nice person and they like me, so it's not too awkward.

For general legal stuff, yes, but you have to keep in mind that when you're talking about a consumer dispute or something small with your credit card, there just isn't much we can offer. Also, we don't have consumer-facing practices, so I can't help much with your speeding ticket, will, or divorce.

All my family still asks me to fix their PCs/printers/modems/chrome cast/phones etc.

Even though I was only ever a software dev and manager.

Quick question, nothing real complicated: some "friends" of mine are looking to diversify their portfolios and have asked if I would be willing to manage their investment in a private social club where adults may or may not engage in the sporting life. So, technically, I would really just be like a building manager, not a casino operator or bookmaker or pander or mid-level coke distributor. Just managing the property and refilling their sodas. Sound good?

I work in storm water management/civil engineering. People always want me to look at a house they are thinking about buying to see if it has flooded or will flood or if it's in the floodplain or if they need flood insurance.

It could depend on the circumstance, but I would never expect my friends to provide me their professional expertise or services for free.

But once again, I think a lot of it depends on the type of service, etc.

I spend 9 months out of the year correcting other people's children. I happily offer my free services to the community anytime I'm not at work and children are being obnoxious around me.

My BIL is a surgeon, and a SIL is an NP. We will usually bounce a kids injury or illness off of them. Not looking for free surgery or anything like that, but tell them the circumstances/symptoms and ask if we need to take them to the dr or just ice it or OTC meds, etc.

My grandfather owns a large manufacturer making steel products, powder coat plant, etc. My dad and a few uncles work for him. They have always had 'government projects' as we called them. Making legs for deer feeders, deer blinds, deer camp bunk beds, and the like. It's not really an alteration of what they make, just procuring surplus material to be repurposed for those activities. Sometimes running them through the night shift on the paint line to get it a color more conducive to the use, since 95% of what they make is white or light colored.

Generally I do but only at a high level. My wife is an attorney and she will also give high level advise but will always caveat it with "I am not your attorney nor do I know all the details".

We also don't have friends or family that abuse this so it hasn't become an issue.

Depends on whether it comes with free hookers and blow.

I will answer generic legal questions. Anything that requires actual representation and formal engagement, I refer out to friends.

Lawn advice all the time.
"What bug is this?" Often.
Even as a chemistry teacher, but mostly it's either "what's on fire in deer park" or "can you tutor my kid" which are obviously very different!

My SIL is a PA and my wife does the same thing with the kids. My wife also owns a photography business and she does free sessions for our nieces that others pay $500+ for, so it works out.
