Ya... interesting stuff.

Initial word is that it has to do with projects funds and something to do with Laredo.

Dannenbaum Engineering, one of the state's premier firms for infrastructure planning and design, is cooperating with federal authorities regarding government requests for information. Company management is investigating the basis of the government requests. We are uncertain whether the inquiry is focused on the company's activities or those of its business competitors. We intend to comment further when appropriate.

Since they're at your offices I'm pretty certain it's got nothing to do with your competitors.

wild guess would be paying off state officials to do state work like major highway jobs. Most of those receive federal funding of some type so that's why the feds were there. We're actually bidding a TXDOT job next week designed by Dannenbaum. Again, just a wild guess.

This is nothing new when it comes to winning large projects, everyone use money or items to lure contracts, the bigger the projects the bigger the payday.

Did a news search and there's been a bunch of smoke in Laredo for a while.

From what I was told they are the contractor working on that project

I'm guessing bribery and public corruption. They just secured a multi-million contract with the City of Laredo from what I heard yesterday.

One article pointed out that Dannenbaum was awarded $1MM for a waterline project in Laredo that was not awarded through an RFQ process. It seems to me that the Laredo mayor was sick of it and blew the whistle on them. There is another contract that they are negotiating for the program management of the new Hidalgo County courthouse, and they have faced some scrutiny on their fees versus actual work they will be performing. A more recent article says that documents they took related to the Hidalgo County Regional Mobility Authority and the El Pico water plant in Laredo. They have collected over $7.7MM in fees from the Hidalgo County RMA for their program management of some toll roads being designed there.

Locally, they are the program manager for the Houston Ship Channel Bridge replacement with HCTRA. They were also the segment engineer for Segment F-1 of the Grand Parkway. They were also involved in the widening of IH-10. They are the engineering consultant on the Jersey Village Long-Term Flood Recovery study and some drainage studies in City of Stafford. They are the engineering consultant for the Gulf Coast Community Protection and Recovery District, working to build the Ike Dike. They do plenty of work with the City of Houston and Harris County, particularly precincts 3 and 4. They were recently awarded a $5MM hydrology and hydraulics contract with TXDOT from the Houston District.

The FBI descended on a host of city and county government buildings Wednesday, executing search warrants as part of a public corruption probe that one councilman said has cast a dark cloud over Laredo and Webb County.

"It is embarrassing, but we welcome this investigation," said Laredo Mayor Pete Saenz at a news conference held at the Webb County Courthouse.

Quote:

"Obviously there's issues, possibly, with the entire structure of the city, since the FBI is investigating various departments," Saenz said. "Webb County and the city have had some history, frankly."

Standing outside the Courthouse, Webb County Commissioner John Galo said the raids did not surprise him."Corruption in Webb County has been going on for too long," he said.

Dannenabum is the program manager. HNTB was involved in the environmental and public involvement--I don't know if they are a sub to Dannenbaum or if they are under contract directly with HCTRA. As I understand it, there are 3 additional design consultants responsible for the actual design of the bridge.

Dannenbaum's lawyer released this statement today:
Quote:

"Dannenbaum Engineering, one of the state's premier firms for infrastructure planning and design, continues to cooperate with federal authorities regarding the collection of materials at company offices in Houston, Laredo, McAllen and San Antonio on Wednesday.

"The FBI raids on the company offices raise some troubling questions about the government's conduct and intentions in this evolving situation. I have been communicating with federal authorities for weeks and they never requested any company documents. I personally advised several Houston FBI agents yesterday that, if asked, the company would have voluntarily produced all of the seized records. Instead, the FBI raids appear to have been orchestrated by the government for maximum news coverage in at least four Texas news media markets. We also ask whether an FBI spokesperson referred to non-existent 'public safety' threats at the raid sites simply to intensify news coverage of the matter. Lost in the rush of breaking-news TV and website reports was the presumption of innocence for Dannenbaum Engineering management and employees.

"As we continue to cooperate with the federal government, we also are reviewing options for seeking an investigation and federal ethics probe of whether federal employees leaked sensitive investigative information for news coverage that led to clearly false information about the company being published by at least one national news organization."

That's what he's supposed to do. And not all federal judges are overly sympathetic to the "feds."

Going to turn this into a "government picking on the little guy" story to start trying to get some public sympathy.

Somewhat comical that their lawyer thinks the FBI would or should just call them up and ask to hand over all the potentially incriminating evidence nicely.
