my closet only has a single rod and shelf which makes it not ideal for storing 2 peoples clothes/shoes.

which option do you think is better?

1) have a carpenter install a 2nd rod/shelf and possibly some other wooden shelves

2) buy/install a closet system from home depot/container store/etc.

anyone know who to call for option #1?

ELFA shelving from Container Store is the way to go.

Wait until one of their semi-annual sales. They'll design it for you based on your measurements and you can install it yourself.

It comes with all the parts and pieces, diagrams, and instructions. It's actually super easy to install.

Have your husband do it.
