Does anyone know how much the kid that shows the Grand Champion Steer gets to keep from the winning bid?

And, what is the cost to raise a Grand Champion Steer?

He keeps $75k.

Cost is raise is roughly whatever you spend.

Well, thanks on the first question.

About what is the average someone spends to raise a Grand Champion Steer?

And this year was just a little over half of the world record of $600,001 from 2001.

Depends on how much you want to spend on a steer. The kid that won his Dad is a commercial and show calf breeder and one of the nicest guys I know. He knows cattle.

I saw the Reserve Grand Champion was bought by Zack Brown for 330k but they did not show the Grand Champion auction on tv. Thought it was cool an artist was there giving back to the rodeo in that way.

He and his wife along with four other buyers went in together.

He did FFA when he was younger.

So, how often does a kid with no breeder inside connections win in Houston? I assume kids who only have the money they won from scrambles can't buy a superior bloodline animal, right? So, are the winners usually someone who has the means to buy really good genetics or can an underdog have just as good a shot as a pedigreed steer?

What would be a normal cost of a "normal" steer? $5000?

What does it cost to feed, house, and care for a steer over the course of a year?

I'm kinda curious too. I grew up here in the city and don't know much about the ways of animal husbandry.

I mean, other than the really basic parts like bulls and cows doing it.

5,000 grand gets you a pretty good steer private treaty if you can pick one and project how it will do based on the judge at that major show.

Good steers can be found if you work at it. If you go to a sale that's open bid looking for a steer that won Houston, it will be around $25,000 to 40,000 once all the high rollers go to war. I can tell you Ive never paid over 10,000 and that's been only a few times and we placed a steer at most majors and win our County. We have been in the final drive a few times with steers that don't break the bank.

Also the Ft. Worth show let's you keep every cent and no money is taken for scholarships

Thanks Burnet. How much is feed, housing, and care for a year? I am just wondering how much these kids wind up with when it is all said and done. Only giving them $75K seems low for all that is involved in getting a winning steer ready.

Wonder if any 5* recruits want to start "raising" steers?

Good quality show feed cost around $300 a ton. I live on a ranch so we have indoor stallls and pens at our barn. For kids that don't have family land to keep their steers, then usually most schools have a FFA Ag barn where you can keep your animal. Usually about $10 a month to have your animal stalled at the school.

What we do is we hit a lot of summer jackpot shows to gain points, prizes, and money. We will usually hit around 20 to 40 summer jackpot shows. Some vary in money from couple hundred dollars to thousands of dollars and some really expensive prizes that can be one. Very common if you hit these jackpot shows and have a good steer you can make some good money and win some great prizes.

Our County show is not terminal and we have a bid committee so typically Grand Champion steer is around $4,500 to 6,500 guaranteed money and you allowed to take the animal to a major show like, Dallas State Fair, Ft. Worth, San Antonio, San Angelo, Austin and Houston.

Some County shows across Texas a Grand Champion steer can bring more than $10,000 or more.

The steer that won Ft. Worth this year the girl got $240,000. She keeps every cent. Also Ft. Worth places 10 steers per class and this year outside your breed and reserve breed champions, all placed steers got 12.75 a pound. So say a 1400 pound steer that placed in that class, that exhibitor would get (1400*12.75)= $17,850

What is a jackpot show? Is it a progress show where you are being judged against other people raising steers for later "big" shows/fairs?

Also, if the county show isn't terminal, is there not an auction at the end? Or do the people "buying" the grand champion just understand that they're not getting anything since the steer will go on to a bigger show?

Sorry if these are dumb questions, but I'm pretty ignorant of how this all works.

So, does Houston provide more scholarships to a variety of different kids with the money since the winner only keeps $75K?

Yes. It goes into a pool and allows for more money to go towards the later lots. It's a redistribution of sorts.

Yes jackpots are progress show where you are being judged against other people raising steers for later "big" shows.

Also yes County's that are not terminal it's understood that buyers do not get animals and all the money is pooled into a bid committee from local people and businesses from our County for the kids.

What is the general consensus amongst the stockshow crowd about HLSR? Every year a new group of people on my facebook page announce that they are done with HLSR and will focus on SA, FTW and now Austin seems to be getting more popular. They all say Houston is more hassle than it's worth and on top of it all a ton of the scholarship money goes to "kids who wouldn't know a cow if it was in their living room." Is Houston becoming less popular?

I think part of it is that Houston continues to increase in size, thus complexity, and many people don't agree with the caps on auction money retention.

They aired both live back-to-back on Sat at noon, but it went quick. Maybe 7-8 mins and it was all over. ZB was in a buying group with Schaefer Ranchwear and others. They bid on the GC a few times as well, but backed off towards the end.
