After 90 years of serving so many generations of Texans on I-10 the iconic eatery will close soon. Saw a FB post and a piece in the local paper where the family has sold the property. Looks like the building will be demolished and there are no plans for Franks to be rebuilt.
Such sad news for so many of us who grew up eating at Franks whenever I-10 was in the travel plans. I have memories of eating there on road trips with my grandparents back in the 50's.
Solid comfort food, world class pies...down home service. Looks like we will be making a special venture over to Schulenberg to make a last stop for chicken fried steak for me, pot roast for her and PIE !!!!!

Well, rats!

Yes to Frank's PIE.

This is a big loss. What did they go through, three expansions over the years?

When I was a cranky kid on the Hou-SA haul, their curio shop was a wonder. Usually got a rubber-band powered balsa airplane, which I assembled and repeatedly flew into my little sister's hair in our huge station wagon. Good times.
Memories of my late father as we headed toward a dove hunt around Moulton...Frank's was a must-stop. In fact, it was a must-stop coming AND going.
Nasty weather? Good coffee, yes, a piece of pie....wait it out at Frank's.

Never thought this one would happen.

This ranks up there , family memory wise, with the late great San Jacinto Inn. I think this may be the last eatery type memory that we have.

I agree with everything posted above but had you eaten there lately? I hadn't for years, probably decades, until I stopped by a couple of months ago. The place was virtually empty and the food was mediocre to be kind.
At least we still have our memories.

I've read similar but we went last summer and the cfs, her pot roast and our PIE was still excellent. Remember Franks is simple comfort food. Large portions, good sides, warm bread and PIE. Hard to screw that up but also hard to claim that type of food is 5 star.

Saw the article yesterday. Can't say that I ever ate at Franks' that I know of. Always been a Joel's BBQ guy on my food stop to or from SA.

That was our team's standard lunch stop when we would play in the Stanley Krist tournament each spring. Lunch would then be followed by passing out on the bus in a food coma until it was time to get warmed up for the night game.

They sold some homemade pickles in their gift shop that I used to love getting as a kid and it was a special treat bc they were $$. The last time we stopped by there (2010) they no longer had them. I was devastated.

I stopped there with friends while heading back from tubing a few years ago. the food was meh and there were 3 to 4 roaches spotted crawling on the walls. We never went back.

Frank's is/was good, but Schobel's is just as good IMO.

Just move the stop up a couple of exits.

There are two within less than 20 miles of each other on 290. A Buc'ees on the north side of the highway wouldn't be a bad investment.

It's not that close. About an hour down the road, and it would be great spot for one. Doesn't need to be one of the giant ones

I know you are trolling, but have you seen the traffic on a random weekday in Luling, much less on a holiday weekend?

Schulenberg would actually be a great spot for another Buc Ee's. Luling is too close when you are coming from SA for a pit stop, Schulenberg would be the pit stop place for west to east traffic and Luling will remain the pit stop place for east to west traffic. Both are about the same distance from the major city centers.

And they are not remotely close enough together to prevent high success.

Good memories of Franks circa 1970s-mid 90s. Ate there many times on trips to/from Praha.
Go to order was Schulenburger, Fries, DP, Chocolate Meringue Pie then go browse the gift shop or play the old arcade machines as you walked out.

Franks is on the south side of I-10.

Local rumor is John Deere dealership. Buc-ee's would be a traffic nightmare with I-10 and Hwy.77 intersecting but an excellent location
