The article linked is from 2004 and in the end, that article has lots of fail. It looks like Thompson, not Germans, bombed the moon here.

Other than seeing the movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, I am not familiar with Thompson's body of work and this article encourages me to keep it that way...

I don't think it was too much different than most of his drug induced rants, this only being a bit more biased since he hated Bush and was long time friends with John Kerry.

I find almost all political commentary to be whiney, for one side or the other. Hunter was always very much anti-establishment, and he never grew out of it. Pretty much just got worse with age. Kinda like anyone else as they get older. It's just more noticable because it came through in his writing that he was becoming a crotchety old man. It was still an amusing article to me.

probably why he offed himself. I doubt very much that he was depressed. Probably just bored with what he was doing and was just forcing it; being why his writiing lacked the pizazz it once did. No point in living a life like that.

Watched Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas the other day. That POS knocked off 'August Rush' as the worst pile of **** movie I've ever had the misfortune of watching.

Anything else this dude wrote worth reading?

The book (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) is better than the movie. It's easier to get into his head and experience the madness when you are reading, at least in my opinion.

Also, I'd recommend his book about living with the Hell's Angels. Haven't read it in years, but I remember it being entertaining.

I can see why his writing style would be an acquired taste to some.

Even with that experience the movie is crap. Some parts are funny but the book is so much better.

It seems that HST figured out that people can't tell the difference between schtick and substance, and bought the former just as quickly once the ball got rolling. He ran out the clock still being able to financially afford his chemical dependencies, apparently. If he had Keith Richards' constitution, he'd be writing copy for Wendy's snarky Twitter feed.
