Coming down with some non-Texans and need to intro them to some good TexMex/SW.

It's been a few years since I've been downtown. What's the board's reccomendation?

TIA

Don't go to either of those. My opinion of course. MiCocina for the win. Not Tex Mex but Ernesto's Tacos on McCart Ave is a good hole in the wall place.

The "Fort Worth staple" Joe T Garcia's is the most over-rated restaurant I've ever seen. The only draw is the atmosphere and courtyard/patio. It's fun if you're going with a group. The food is bland and the margaritas are too watered down.

Uncle Julio's for the win.

There are some good answers interspersed here. I'm a big fan of The Original.

Earl nailed Joe T's. Good atmosphere but the food is pretty spare.

The standard for good is there can't be a better option?

I enjoy Joe Ts food quite a bit, along with many other places. Some of them better. Some of them not.

The problem is that most other Tex-Mex restaurants are better. It's better than Taco Bueno I'll give you that. Can't go much further than that for Joe T's. Again, mediocre at best.

Nope. If you don't love the tacos that come with the Mexican dinner then you have no soul. I could eat 10 of those in a sitting

I've never understood those who think Joe T's is "great" Mexican food. I enjoy going there for the atmosphere, but Taco Bell has better food.

Not Joe T's, if you want food that is actually good. If you want a cool atmosphere that is classic Fort Worth, then by all means.

We like Meso Maya, Mesero, Mi Cocina, and La Playa Maya. Out of those I only think of La Playa Maya as true Tex-mex.

"Joe T's has bad food" is starting to become as cliche from the Fort Worth trying-way-too-hard crowd as "we're not Dallas!" (all the while sporting a Benbrook or Saginaw address).

Is it one of the 20 or so best Mexican food places in Fort Worth? No. But saying the food is terrible or equating it to Taco Bell is laughable.

Some of the same people who hate on Joe T's will turn around and go eat at The Original which is absolute dog *****

Don't really like the Original either. I'd take Mexican Inn over Joe T's or The Original, and that's saying something...

Joe T's is not bad. It's just not worth the wait or acclaim it gets. I've eaten there twice. Wasn't impressed either time.

Don't know any TCU alumni that have ever recommended either. I've known Pulidos for years (used to have an Irving location by where I grew up and still has several different locations including in Eastland by my land. Solid standard Tex-Mex (greasy enchiladas).

Used to get the Cousins family pack every few weeks in Keller - not spectacular but good.

Love Fort Worth for so many reasons, but TexMex is not one of them. The unfortunate reality is that Funkytown is simply not competitive with Dallas, Austin or Houston on the TexMex scene. If I had to pick a place, I suppose I'd flip a coin between Uncle Julio's or Mi Cocina. The cheese enchiladas at The Original are acceptable.

The far better alternative is to eat some El Capitan Asada tacos from Salsa Limon on the way to Joe T's, then just sit on the patio and sip tequila on the rocks while your friends torture themselves with the summer camp cafeteria slop they sling at that place.
