I am just curious for now. In what towns or areas do regular families with school aged children live if one or both parents work at or near TCU?

Second vote for tanglewood

Great people, incredible elementary school. Building a new one to ease overcrowding but our kids still have a great experience there.

Assuming we're not talking private schools -- Those with a lot of money, Tanglewood.

Those with money but not as much seem to be going the Ridglea route and improving that district significantly.

Much will depend on what happens with Tanglewood Elem Part 2 and what that does to real estate demand as right now it's inflated due to the push to be in that school zone.

Much of that is still Tanglewood district (with the rest being Westcliff).

I live in Southlake and work just north of TCU, but it's a half hour commute at best.

As noted above, the FWISD sucks so if you want to live inside or near 820 you will need to find the neighborhoods that feed into the 2-3 good elementary schools. Many of those kids end up at All Saints or Country Day so private school may be in your future at some point.

And that's the same plan literally everyone has, so prices are outraaaageous.

Look at Benbrook at that price point.

Frankly, your best bet may be out west in Aledo. The commute to the TCU area isn't too bad and the schools are excellent.

I have nothing constructive to add that hasn't already been noted except to say that I feel your pain. In any other context 300k is a ton of money but it fetches little more than a dirt lot in the good elementary zones.

Matsui and mhayden have a decent idea here. The Tanglewood zones area they're talking about isn't large but homes (albeit needing some updates usually) are available in the low 300s with some regularity. Specifically, the pocket north of I-20, west of Hildring Dr E, and south of Westdale/South Dr. Bounded by Hulen to the west.

You could buy in Benbrook. They just built a new elementary school (and renovated the old elementary school to a 7 & 8 grade campus) 2 years ago and a new high school 4 years ago. Supposedly pretty good teachers.

Disclaimer: I shelfishly mention that because I am selling my house (3/2 with 2 car garage) in Benbrook around the corner from the schools this summer (July).

If you're at all interested, drop me a line.

We live just west of White Settlement in far west Tarrant County (.25 mile from the Parker County line) - nice area and affordable new housing with 20 minute drive to TCU/downtown. Downside is schools but we have ours in private at Covenant Classical.

Aledo is very nice as well along with Walsh Ranch area going in. We'd rather not have the kids in Aledo schools either, though. Huge growth and too many kids funneling through one high school.

Really wish we had a better public school option close - we could afford quite a house without $30k / year in private school tuition.

Maybe look at Ridglea Country Club Estates, it's a golf course neighborhood that feeds into Ridglea Hills Elementary. Houses are probably in your range.

I know FW ISD isn't that great but Arlington Heights isn't that bad right? If so, then as someone mentioned above, Ridglea Hills area has some cool old homes, many of which have been renovated or available to renovate. Go south of 30 on Camp Bowie to Clayton Rd and go south. Or take Southwest Blvd west from the Hulen Mall area and turn north once you cross Vickery. Solid area with lots of young families and professionals moving in.

Price per square is relevant, but you're not getting anywhere near $300k in RH for a house that doesn't need substantial work at a + multiple kids size. I'm working on a 400K purchase total gut job....

North Hi Mount in AH is running 200/sf +, South Hi Mount starts to be getting ehhhhhh...

2018 y'all.

I would be careful living toward Aledo and commuting in. Traffic already backs up in rush hour and with Walsh Ranch coming in it will be much worse over the next few years.

Arlington Heights and Southwest are actually pretty good schools. And Pascal has some of the best AP programs in the nation. But most TexAgers (except for me) wouldn't be caught dead putting their kids in public schools. They'd be in classes with ~~~shudder~~~ minorities.

I did lol, but their white kid would be the minority at Heights and Southwest.

The issue w/Heights isn't Heights, it's the middle schools that feed it - Monnig in particular, which is atrocious.

Southwest may be fine academically/in terms of opportunities but you've got WAY more gang activity in the district. Lots of places I'd live in FW if it weren't for schools but south of I-20 ain't one of em

My family moved from Ridgmar to Berkeley in '79 when I was one and was fortunate enough to attend Lily B Clayton, McLean Middle, and Paschal High School (AP & Honors). Along the way I made some of the greatest friends that I still keep in touch with and many went to A&M with me. Some of them came from Tanglewood elementary, some from Westcliff elementary, some from Daggett, and some from William James. Of course many kids transfer from private schools (Trinity Valley, Country Day, All Saints, etc) into Paschal.

One of my best friends to this day was a chubby Hispanic kid that I met on the playground at Lily B in 3rd grade. His parents moved here from Mexico city and his Dad started a fire & flood restoration business. He then went onto Mclean & Paschal, then tcu for undergrad, then ut for grad school, and then the peace corps for 3yrs w/ his wife. He is now a regional director for the irs in San Antonio.

Maybe look further down Chisholm Trail? I'd imagine you can get alot more bang for your buck, get a bigger piece of land (if that's what you're looking for), and not pay property taxes out the wazoo. Plus Chisholm Trail is usually wide open. Wouldn't be a bad commute at all to TCU.

We've lived downtown and in Fairmount since we've been married and loved both, but we are super happy in South Hills now. My in-laws have lived here for almost 40 years and it used to be a predominately older demographic, but more young families are moving in.

If you're looking for something 2500+ square feet then South Hills probably wouldn't work for you. But we can be on the TCU campus in less than 10 minutes.

* We did move here already knowing that our daughter won't attend the public schools we're zoned for unless something drastically changes. We're planning on private school, but definitely open to some of the charter schools in the area.

Interest thread. I started working at Tcu 7 weeks ago and commuting from Plano every day until we sell our house. The wife is looking into burleson. She's likely to be working in Mansfield/ kennedale next school year.

Burleson isn't bad, just make sure you get in the Kerr/Centennial feeder pattern. Further south and west you go, the more WT you'll run into. Or if your wife is going to work in Mansfield, get into a pattern for one of the following high schools: Legacy/Mansfield/Lake Ridge.

Edit: Plus Burleson has a H-E-B

Thanks! She's all over the school thing since she's been a math teacher/specialist in Richardson for ten years. She's definitely the one in charge. I'm just looking forward to cutting my drive down after Richardson then plano to UTA and now TCU!

My kids went to Mansfield Legacy. All three of those schools are really good.
