Austin votes to change the name of RHS. Another sad day for the many graduates that asked to keep the name as originally opened. Would think 90% or higher do not even know who the school was named after, or his bio. Should add Obama was the second choice. Named Northeast HS.

Northeast huh how original AISD. Seems about right. We don't have a better name in mind or someone that deserves the honor but we are for sure taking that racist Reagan name down.

That's what makes it even funnier. They couldn't pull the trigger on Barack so let's just call it Northeast. Guess they wanted to stick with the directional theme after Johnston became Eastside Memorial.

Other targets of AISD include: Lamar MS, Lanier, East Side Memorial at Johnston, Austin and Bowie High Schools. I'm surprised they haven't targeted Travis HS yet.

They aren't gonna come after Austin High or Travis High.

The AISD member, Teich (sp?) Specifically mentioned in Bowie and Austin high schools.

There have been people mentioning this... but not advanced yet.

Damn, that's a lot to do in just 20 yrs. If only there was a major political party that proclaimed to be about small government and individual liberty and didnt spend it's time on public restroom laws. That certainly wont look stupid with a few years perspective.

OK, 30-40 years.

When I was in high school, seeminlgly everyone smoking (restrooms, wherever), I sure didn't see a day when smoking was almost outlawed in public. I can see where booze goes down the same path. Done more in "private", not publicly accepted. Not my idea! Just saying.

I can also imagine a day where there's a "signature" moment in gun violence where the pressure against gun owners and gun sales and manufacture is huge,. Again, not my idea!

Would you believe that the mascot was originally simply the roadrunner when the school was founded, but was subsequently "gussied up" into Chaparrals not long after (in the mid-1970s)? But we were all a whole lot less PC, then.

Austin HS will not have a name change. It is the oldest continually operated HS in Texas and rumored oldest West of the Mississippi.

Always wondered how that school ended up with the mascot being called the Maroons.

School color is maroon and the name is the same but not the original Austin High.

Don't count on that with the nature of Austin and it's Silly Council... and their influence on AISD Trustees.
